Annual Grads Within Reach Walk encourages students to re-enroll and graduate
Community members and HISD employees gathered at Booker T. Washington High School on Saturday, September 10, to take part in the annual Grads Within Reach Walk. The event took volunteers to the doorsteps of students who had withdrawn from school due to various personal challenges to encourage them to go back and earn their diplomas.
As of August 29, there were 5,730 students within the district who did not return for the new school year. Staff from nearly 30 high schools visited the homes of these students to offer support and resources.

We don’t know what to expect, but that’s part of the excitement. Anything can happen. You’re dressed to the nines, surrounded by your friends in a fancy environment that makes you feel like an adult—and after all, aren’t you an adult? Graduation is only weeks away, and then you enter the real world, whatever that means. This is your last night to define High School You™ and to show your peers how you want to be remembered when you look back on your high school career.
When Heights High School student Miles Steinmeyer walked into his senior prom, he didn’t know what to expect. He was excited. But that excitement, as it always is when Miles takes bold steps into the unknown, was colored by fear. Miles is tall on an average day, but as he strode into prom in a pair of four-inch heels, he towered over his classmates, statuesque. There was no way for Miles to blend in. He didn’t want to blend in.

Kashmere High School sophomore Floyd Young dreams of becoming a professional football player one day, but before he can play in the NFL, he knows he must return to school. Young had not been in a classroom due to the threat of COVID-19, but his mindset changed on Saturday when HISD Superintendent Millard House personally came to his home to check on him.
Along with staff, administrators, and community members, House walked door-to-door as part of the “Students Within Reach Walk” effort to reconnect with students who had not returned to school this fall.
