Texas Children’s Hospital, along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and HISD Trustee Rhonda Skillern-Jones, will host Houston’s First School Immunization Sunday from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14 at Forest Brook Middle School (7525 Tidwell Road).
Free immunizations will be provided to Houston-area students.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month, which recognizes the success of vaccines and the challenges presented by vaccine-preventable diseases.
Nutrition Services’ Student Eligibility and Accountability department has added more schools to the Community Eligibility Provision pr
ogram, increasing the number that provide free school lunches to 186 eligible campuses. HISD serves free breakfast at every school and to all students.
Nutrition Services continues to increase the number of HISD schools participating in CEP.
Nutrition Services School Eligibility and Accountability department (SEA) improved two of its programs to increase satisfaction and participation. SEA digitized the Community Eligibility Provision program survey that provides more free lunches to HISD students. In addition, ParentOnline.net is now SchoolCafé.com, a software that allow parents to load funds into and manage their child’s meal account. SEA Manager Mark Allen believes these improvements will speed up the process for the back-to-school rush.
The SEA department is responsible for collecting data, and reporting it to the Texas Department of Agriculture. In February, TDA applauded Nutrition Services’ SEA team for having an excellent program that services students and their families.

After years of construction, Waltrip High School is now poised to unveil the completion of several major renovations projects when students return to school this fall.
On the first day of school, students are expected to be welcomed by a new main entry and band hall, new first- and second-floor classrooms, new administrative offices, and new career education spaces.

The biggest lessons sometimes come from the smallest mistakes.
Booker T. Washington engineering students on the Golden Eagle Rocket teams worked on their supersonic rockets all year long and then traveled to White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico in June to launch them. When both failed to launch, it was heartbreaking, but the students learned some valuable lessons.
Berzayda Ochoa has been selected as the new principal of Davila Elementary School. Ms. Ochoa just completed her fourth year as dean of instruction at Navarro Middle School, previously known as Jackson Middle School. She began her educational career in HISD in 2007 as a bilingual elementary school teacher. Ms. Ochoa, who is a graduate of HISD schools, holds a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Lamar University.
Texas’ school finance law gives HISD trustees little choice but to place an item on the Nov. 8 ballot asking voters for permission to send $165 million of their local tax dollars to the state.
Trustees will meet Thursday to consider calling the election, which is necessary because Texas’ school finance law considers HISD to be a “wealthy” district, even though 3 out of every 4 students live in a low-income household. As a property wealthy district, HISD is required by law to send an estimated $165 million in locally generated property taxes to the state. HISD, however, cannot pay the money the state says the district owes unless voters approve.

This month’s Workshop Wednesday featured a presentation by Michelle Levi, president & CEO of Elite Tax and Notary Service, titled Overcoming Small Business Obstacles. Participants learned techniques to increase operational efficiency and boost productivity in a small business environment.
“If you own a small business or are planning to start one, it’s important to know your industry and pitfalls to avoid,” Levi said. “Planning is essential for long-term success.”
Levi stressed the importance of sound administrative practices to about 40 attendees and explained that maintaining a successful small business comes through having a strong structure that is purposefully organized.
