City of Houston to honor HISD student, former trustee at Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Awards

As Houston celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Mayor’s Hispanic Advisory Board are honoring five exemplary Houstonians, which includes a current HISD student and former Board of Education trustee at the Mayor’s Hispanic Heritage Awards. The awards will be live streamed on the Houston Municipal Channel (HTV) and the City of Houston’s social media pages at 6:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 14.

From receptionist to principal, school leader answers call to community

J.P. Henderson Elementary School Principal Maria Guerra’s journey in education went full circle from front desk to front office. Call after call, Guerra started her career in HISD as the front-desk receptionist at Henderson in the East End while working on her bachelor’s degree. Providing customer service that fostered trust and collaboration from parents and students was her priority. Fifteen years later, Guerra’s priority continues to be her guide, as she now leads J. P. Henderson as the school principal.

Wraparound and Nutrition Services join students, parents to revitalize Golfcrest Elementary garden

A cool morning breeze pushed humid air over the dewy grass at Golfcrest Elementary, as parents and community volunteers raked and reclaimed the campus garden beds.

Nearly 20 excited students joined in to help prepare the soil and build additional vegetable and flower beds for the fall growing season.

HISD plans activities for Dyslexia Month

Did you know that 15 to 20 percent of the population may have dyslexia? Did you know that dyslexia is not just for those speaking English but can affect those speaking another language? Evidence-based research has proven that intense systematic, multisensory, and explicit instruction can help students overcome dyslexia.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month, and HISD’s Dyslexia Dept. invites students, staff, and the community to celebrate with a variety of activities beginning today.

Mentorship program ROSES celebrates start of a new year

Students from HISD mentoring program Resilient Outstanding Sisters Exemplifying Success (ROSES) were celebrated during  the second-annual ROSES kick-off event, “ Blooming Stronger,” on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Students and mentors  joined virtually from their HISD campuses to learn how the ROSES mentorship program can help them ”bloom stronger” in the face of challenges.

Hip-hop legend 50 Cent’s G-Unity Business Lab to help HISD youth

On Monday, the hip-hop world and HISD came together to help give back to the community at two separate events. At Wheatley High School, one of the biggest rap stars of the 2000s, 50 Cent, took his philanthropic efforts to HISD with the G-Unity Business Lab Kickoff.
