Three other HISD students also earn perfect scores on college-readiness tests this year

Zachary Kortum, a senior at the DeBakey HS for Health Professions, cemented his status as “college-ready” this year by bringing home perfect scores on both the ACT and the SAT.
“I was very excited and surprised to find out that I’d scored so well,” said Zachary. “My parents bought me two prep books, and I worked through those outside of school, but DeBakey did a lot to help me get ready for the tests, too. The great Advanced Placement classes I took really prepared me, and the school offered a practice SAT before the real test.”
Hundreds turned out for Carnegie Vanguard High School’s third annual International Festival on Nov. 19.
The festival, which was held after school, featured all sorts of games, crafts and food from different countries. There were also cultural fashion and performance shows. Continue reading
The robotics club at the newly-renamed Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men is hosting a VEX robotics tournament on Saturday, Nov. 15, at Space Center Houston (1601 NASA Parkway, 77058). Now in its third year, the Knights of Engineering Robotics Club at the all-boys academy is inviting families from throughout HISD to attend the tournament, which is expected to last most of the day.

More than 400 students from 14 Houston ISD schools participated in a UIL academics meet, the first of the 2014-2015 season, at Lee High School on Oct. 18.
Academics meets are held throughout the school year. They include character-building educational activities and emphasize good sportsmanship and fair play.

Three Houston ISD seniors each have $2,000 scholarships to put toward college thanks to the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Karoline Hight (swimming) of Bellaire HS, Aaron Reese (football) of Kashmere HS and Tre’Shunda James (volleyball) of Carnegie Vanguard HS received Triple-Impact Competitors scholarships at a banquet held on Oct. 18.

HISD Up Close, hosted by HISD Board of Education President Juliet Stipeche, explores the initiatives, educational programs and information about the school district that is of interest to students, parents, teachers and the community. In September, Stipeche spoke with Cindy Puryear, the district’s literacy director, and Garcia Elementary School Principal Aaron Dominguez about HISD’s Read Houston Read program. Puryear discussed the formation of the HISD Student Congress with the organization’s founding members. Finally, Stipeche visited with Rice University’s award winning mathematician, Dr. Richard Tapia. Fifty-six students from six Houston ISD high schools are semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
The students, who attend Bellaire HS, Carnegie Vanguard HS, Challenge Early College HS, DeBakey HS, The High School for Performing and Visual Arts, and Lamar HS, are eligible to receive part of the $33 million pot of scholarships that will be awarded in the spring. There are nearly 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, and about 7,600 will receive scholarships. More than 22,000 students applied by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Continue reading
When you read this year’s HISD Code of Conduct, you’ll see something interesting on the last page – a form to request a new sport on your campus.
According to the district’s athletics department, students and parents have always been able to ask for a sport, and requests for both UIL- and non-UIL sanctioned sports have been requested. Some of those requests have resulted in schools getting a new team, including lacrosse at Lamar High School and volleyball at Carnegie Vanguard High School. Continue reading
