Every senior member of the Worthing HS band earns $50,000 scholarships to Langston University

All nine senior members of the Worthing High School Marching Pride of Sunnyside Band earned scholarships to play for Langston University during a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Oklahoma for band tryouts.

On Friday Nov. 12, all 60 members of the band, including its dancers, traveled to Langston University, which is a historically black college 40 miles north of Oklahoma City. It was an event that was by invitation only.

HISD to distribute food, supplies for the holidays on Dec. 11

HISD Community Partnerships is joining local organizations to spread holiday cheer, food, and supplies in a drive-through distribution event. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, in the Hattie Mae White east parking lot, families in the community are welcome to pick up a variety of items.

Patrick Henry MS student takes home historic No.1 finish at Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza

Patrick Henry Middle School’s Alan Aguilar’s co-first-place vocal finish at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza was more than just taking home the No. 1 spot in the biggest event of the year, but a representation of the deep culture of the mariachi that is important to many HISD students.

HISD job fair seeking workers for Facilities Maintenance

HISD is hosting a Facilities Maintenance worker job fair from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Dec. 11, at the Hattie Mae White Education Support  Center.

Austin HS students talk business on GRAMMY Career Day with music industry professionals

Stephen F. Austin High School was selected as a recipient of the GRAMMY Signature Schools Award.  The GRAMMY Signature Schools Award is designed to honor public high school music programs across the country with special awards and grants based primarily on need and a compelling plan to address that need. 

The GRAMMY Museum awarded a grant of $5,500 to Stephen F. Austin and hosted a virtual question and answer session on Friday with over 60 students in the performing arts department.  Industry professional guests on the panel included moderator David R. Sears, GRAMMY Museum vice president of education of GRAMMY In the Schools, Larry Batiste, music director and owner of LaSugar Bear Entertainment and producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/composer/arranger Jason Goldman.

Get to know Elmore ES’s HISD Office of Talent Teacher Appreciation Award winner

The first HISD Office of Talent Teacher Appreciation Award was awarded to Elmore Elementary School’s Monica Shelvin on Friday.

Shelvin, a 25-year veteran teacher, has been with HISD for 21-years. The first-grade teacher was very surprised by what she described as a “welcome, welcome welcome reward” after what hasn’t been the easiest couple of years to be an educator.

HISD hosting virtual COVID-19 vaccination town halls

COVID-19 vaccinations have been approved for children ages five and up. To answer any questions, HISD is hosting two virtual town halls providing the community the opportunity to ask vaccine questions to a panel that includes a school parent and local public health experts. One town hall will be in English and the other in Spanish.
