HISD to host Dream Summit for students on Dec. 9

Event to help students apply for college, financial aid

The HISD Office of College and Career Readiness and Multilingual Programs departments will be hosting the third-annual Dream Summit to assist students with the college application and financial aid processes on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, 4400 W. 18th St., Houston 77092.

High school students and their families are encouraged to attend the free event. Students should contact their campus college-access coordinator, counselor, or college-success adviser regarding transportation. Five seniors will have a chance to win $500 scholarships for college.

The event aims to help HISD DREAMers, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, visa holders, permanent residents, refugees, and asylum grantees, along with their families. Students will have the opportunity to speak with district representatives who will help them learn more about financial aid requirements and guide them through the application process.   Continue reading

HISD to host HCC ‘second start’ registration drives

If you are a Houston ISD graduate interested in pursuing a college education, it’s not too late! Houston Community College second start coursework begins on Monday, Sept. 25, and in-person support is available.

Teach Forward Houston selects new cohort of fellows

Just as the initial group of Teach Forward Houston fellows successfully finished its first year at University of Houston, the HISD Board of Education approved a second group at its June 8 board meeting.

A new group of graduating HISD seniors are just now being notified of their acceptance into the program. The second cohort is a strong group and includes salutatorians from Liberty and Worthing high schools. They will attend a Summer Bridge program at UH in late July. Summer college fair June 10 for juniors and sophomores

Juniors and sophomores, this free college fair is for you!

The 14th Annual Summer Celebration/College Fair + Workshop takes place on Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center.

At this FREE event, you will learn about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). You will have a chance to speak with HBCU representatives about the college admissions process, academic offerings, student life, athletics, financial aid, and more.

More than 300 students, teachers, parents, and medical center community members converged on the Texas Medical Center on Thursday to celebrate the dedication of the new DeBakey High School for Health Professions.

Columns of blue and white balloons flanked center stage and music from the DeBakey orchestra filled the five-story atrium as attendees took their seats, eager to celebrate the school’s opening and tour the new facility.

“This year we will be celebrating 45 years,” DeBakey Principal Agnes Perry said. “DeBakey High School for Health Professions has successfully introduced and honed an innovative magnet school model.”

Students of Mickey LelandCollege Preparatory Academy for Young Men are in for a great start to the year as the long awaited opening of their new school edges closer.

The $42 million project is about 80 percent complete with move-in expected to begin towards the end of July. Finishing touches are being done to both the painting and drywall, while framing in the new building has almost concluded. Site improvements, such as the development of the outdoor track area, are already underway and should be finished by September.

“The kids are really excited to come back,” said Leland Principal Dameion Crook, who smiled when asked if his staff shared that emotion. “The teachers are pumped about it.”

Graduating EMERGE seniors to be honored at annual celebration 

There are 252 EMERGE seniors graduating in May and heading off to colleges and universities around the country, and they’re on track to receive more than $36 million in scholarships and grants.

This year, students have been accepted to schools such as Harvard University, Brown University, University of Pennsylvania, Bryn Mawr College, Scripps College, Amherst College, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt University, St. John’s University-New York, and Johns Hopkins University.  Continue reading

YWCPA construction on the fast track

Construction is advancing at the Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy with work on the renovations and new addition for the all-girl STEM school nearly halfway complete.

Work is progressing nicely — steel erection is complete, the metal decking has been covered with concrete, and the brick installation will begin in the next couple of weeks.

YWCPA Principal Delesa O’Dell-Thomas said she is ecstatic to see progress being made, and noted she was especially excited to see the new paint colors and select new furniture for the school.

Family Career Night planned for April 19 

HISD District VIII Trustee Diana Davila is hosting a Family Career Night from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19 at East Early College (220 N. Milby St., Houston, 77003).

The event is for parents and students in grades K-12 in the Northeast and East part of the city and will provide the opportunity to learn more about different careers in the Greater Houston area, HISD programs and resources, and how to connect with high education and industry representatives. There also will be an opportunity to win a scholarship.

Dinner will be provided, as well as free giveaways throughout the event. In some cases, transportation will be available. Please check with your school for details.

Houston Hispanic Forum plans Career and Education Day

Learn about college, careers, and financial aid

The Houston Hispanic Forum is hosting its 31st annual Career and Education day on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Students in grades 6-12 and their parents are invited to attend sessions on potential careers, visit with college representatives, and take advantage of hands-on financial aid assistance.

Transportation may be available from your school, so check with your college center for details. If transportation is not provided, parents and students can get to Career and Education Day with a free METRO pass. The forum is free and lunch will be provided.
