HISD students get wild with visit from Houston Zoo ambassador animals

Fonville Middle School is an HISD magnet campus that houses the Academy for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) Professionals. Under the direction of Magnet Coordinator Nishtha Pant, Fonville’s three-year-old magnet program gives STEM scholars access to classes developed to foster creative thinking in scientific fields.

Fonville’s STEM curriculum begins with Introduction to STEM in the sixth grade and branches out into three learning pathways: Engineering, Information Technology, and Computer Science. To supplement these programs of study, Fonville works with community organizations to introduce further STEM concepts. One of these organizations is the Houston Zoo, who visited Fonville on Friday, Nov. 3, with three animal ambassadors in tow.

Girls Belong in School – Period: HISD students participate in period workshops

According to a State of the Period study, nearly a quarter of students experience “period poverty,” a lack access to menstrual hygiene products, which can cause them to miss class time and struggle emotionally and socially in school. To combat this, HISD has teamed up with community partners Dow Chemical and Impact100 to give middle school students a crash-course in period literacy.

HISD opens Sunrise Center in revamped Re-Engagement Center

The final of seven Sunrise Centers—hubs for wellness, nutrition, and social resources for the HISD community—has opened at the former Brock Re-Engagement Center at 1417 Houston Ave. The building once housed HISD’s Student Assistance Department, and the Sunrise Center initiative built on the foundation of the services and resources that were provided there to create an all-new assistance experience for students and their families.

HISD partners with BakerRipley to open Sunrise Center in West Division

HISD launched its sixth of seven Sunrise Centers Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the BakerRipley Gulfton-Sharpstown Campus in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and luncheon.

This center will connect communities in HISD’s West Division with vital resources, programs, and services.

HISD Fine Arts students and teachers raise childhood cancer awareness with gallery show

HISD art students and their instructors gathered at the Asia Society Texas gallery for a unique art showcase on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Students created artwork using the color gold, signifying childhood cancer awareness. The art show is HISD’s third annual collaboration with the Faris Foundation and Asia Society Texas as part of an educational campaign called Let There Be Gold. The showcase, Threads of Gold, was designed to empower student creatives to raise awareness around childhood cancer and utilize art to enact community engagement and social change.

HISD opens Sunrise Center at YDC to serve northeast Houston families

For more than 25 years, the Youth Development Center has been providing elementary students in the North Forest and Scenic Woods neighborhoods with critical after-school care and instruction. Through a new partnership with HISD’s Sunrise Center, they’ll be able to help even more youth thrive academically.

The Center serves up to 120 students in grades 1-6 through its after-school remediation program, free of charge. Most of the students are enrolled in HISD.

HISD opens Sunrise Center at Morefield Boys & Girls Club

HISD opened a Sunrise Center at the Morefield Boys & Girls Club over the weekend with an open house and resource fair. Eventgoers were greeted by the Sterling High School drumline and cheerleaders who hyped up the crowd ahead of their big homecoming game.

HISD’s fourth Sunrise Center will serve the Sterling and Thomas Middle School communities, focusing on support during critical after-school hours between 3-6 p.m.

Mission Milby’s efforts in the East End expanded through new HISD Sunrise Center

HISD opened its third of seven Sunrise Centers at the Mission Milby on Wednesday, Oct. 18, with an activity-filled fall festival that included a vendor fair, health screenings, food, a pumpkin patch, and games and giveaways courtesy of the Houston Dynamo.

Sunrise Centers serve to centralize valuable resources for families, and in this case, those in the Milby, Chávez, and Austin High School feeder patterns. While this latest center is new for the District, Mission Milby has been serving Houston’s Greater East End for two decades.

Gregory Lincoln Education Center receives $10,000 in library upgrades through community partner

HISD is helping turn young readers into leaders, thanks to a partnership with KPMG’s Family for Literacy (KFFL). The organization donated $10,000 to refresh the library inside the Gregory Lincoln Education Center, and Wednesday, Oct. 18, was the big unveiling.
