High school students research Houston environmental issues

Furr High School students testified before Houston City Council on Dec. 16, asking authorities to reject a new trash proposal currently under consideration by the city. According to reports, the council members were impressed with the students’ speeches.

The students are enrolled in Furr’s Environmental Communications pathway, part of HISD’s Linked Learning program that combines rigorous academics with hands-on learning and real-world experiences, thanks in part to a $30 million federal Race to the Top grant.

Boys’ basketball teams ready to hoop it up at annual tournament

More than 20 boys’ basketball teams are set to hoop it up at HISD’s 75th annual boys’ basketball tournament Dec. 18–20.

The match-ups will take place at North Forest, Sharpstown, and Waltrip high schools, as well as Barnett Stadium, Butler Fieldhouse, and the Wilkins Pavilion located on the Forest Brook Middle School campus. Individual game tickets cost $4 each, and tournament passes are available for $10 to attend all games.

Participating HISD high schools are: Austin, Chávez, Davis, Furr, Sam Houston, Kashmere, Lamar, Lee, Madison, Milby, North Forest, Reagan, Sharpstown, Sterling, Waltrip, Washington, Westbury, Westside, Wheatley, and Worthing. Continue reading

Middle College High School students at the Houston Community College Gulfton campus explored the possibilities of a future career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by participating in a day of interactive projects in engineering, coding, and financial literacy as part of Camp STEMovation on Friday, Dec. 12. Student videos preparing classmates and teachers for 1:1 laptop initiative

Students at Davis High School are taking an active role in ensuring that their campus is ready this coming January to distribute laptops to all 1,700 of its students. To help with the one-to-one device deployment, the Davis audio/visual production class has made a series of videos for their classmates, as well as for their teachers.   Continue reading

Chamber of commerce gives laptop case tags for PowerUp schools

HISD principals accept tags for laptop cases for their schools from the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce purchased more than 9,000 luggage tags for five HISD high schools to add to the cases of laptops students are set to receive through the district’s PowerUp program, which will provide every high school student a laptop for use at school and home by 2016. Italian Consulate celebrates winners of literary contest

Students who are taking Italian at Bellaire High School and Pin Oak Middle School entered projects in a literary contest organized and sponsored by the Italian Consulate and the Committee of Italian Residents Abroad. Italian journalist and archeologist Valerio Massimo Manfredi presented the winners with certificates during the 10th Conference of Italian Researchers in the World, which was held at the Italian Consulate on Dec. 6.
