Students enjoy hot dogs with a side of literacy at inaugural ‘Book-Nic’

Students attending HISD’s Sherman Elementary School celebrated summer with a hot dog and a book on July 2, as part of the United Way of Greater Houston’s annual “Day of Action.”

The United Way teamed up with Houston Public Media and the Wesley Community Center to host its inaugural “book-nic” (or book picnic) at the Sherman campus that day. This year, the theme was summer reading, and more than 300 families received a free book to take home. Students could also take part in interactive activities, such as the “make your own book” station, and Wesley Community Center staff members offered free grilled hotdogs and other typical picnic fare to visitors. In addition, the United Way set up its Tiny Library, a free lending library aimed at giving neighborhoods increased access to books. Continue reading →

Petroleum Academy students drill deeper into oil and gas career possibilities

The next generation of America’s oil and natural gas leaders took its first eager steps toward securing successful careers in the energy industry, when a group of 55 rising seniors and recent graduates from the Petroleum Academies at Milby, Westside, and Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy (YWCPA) participated in a two-week, job-shadowing opportunity at various Houston petroleum exploration, production, and service companies.

The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and the Petroleum Equipment & Services Association (PESA) Student Externship Program began in the summer of 2010 to provide a one-of-a-kind experience for future engineering and geosciences students enrolled in the IPAA/PESA Petroleum Academies, and to date, 394 externs have participated.

Ocean predators, paintball wizard top kids’ summer reading lists

Summer vacation may be well under way, but HISD students have not been resting on their laurels since school let out on May 28.

Between May 31 and June 30, children read almost 50,000 books through myON, HISD’s summer reading partner, and two of the most popular titles were a hit at both the elementary- and middle-school levels.

HISD students venture into the world of STEM at Rice

A chemistry formula is just letters to be memorized until it becomes the answer to a problematic disease.

This summer, a group of HISD students are interning in various labs at Rice University and finding such answers. Linked Learning, an HISD program that initiates applied and career-based learning, created these internships with help from the Rice Office of STEM Engagement. More than 300 students applied for 12 spots, making the six-week paid internship applicant pool more competitive than that of a top-tier college.

At the Rice labs, each student is paired with a graduate student mentor. The interns are helping their mentors research everything from Alzheimer’s disease to solar cells to volcanoes. After a few short weeks in the advanced labs, the interns can now toss out scientific terms without a hint of a stammer and handle chemical samples as if it were second nature. Continue reading →

On June 24, the Lamar High School football team received a generous donation and a dose of inspiration from Chevron’s Fuel Your School, a program that seeks to provide educators with useful supplies and materials.

Camp M.I. Way proves educational for both campers and counselors

Over the past several weeks, middle and high school students from HISD campuses across the district have been volunteering at Camp M.I. Way, a special program designed to give students with multiple impairments a chance to practice and expand their social skills in an atmosphere of fun.

As part of the camp, run by Homerun Hitters International, student counselors guide campers in various activities that are designed to engage the five senses. Emerson Greer, a rising junior at Challenge Early College High School, has served as a camp counselor for two years and describes the experience below:

Hollingsworth Science Center project to benefit HISD students twice

More than two dozen students taking millwork and cabinetry classes at Lee High School got a chance to show off their newly acquired skills recently, thanks to a donation that came with a special request.

Grant Hollingsworth, the brother of the late Marcile Hollingsworth, for whom the district’s Hollingsworth Science Center was named, donated $5,000 to make renovations to the center’s greenhouse, with the stipulation that the work be performed by district students.

Lee students constructed 10 tall wooden plant beds and one wooden storage unit for use in the greenhouse using brand-new hand tools such as saws and sanders that were purchased with a portion of the money.

Read Sunnyside Read helps students develop financial literacy skills, too

Students at one school in Houston’s Sunnyside community got a chance to build a foundation of financial savvy alongside their reading skills recently, during a four-day literacy camp sponsored by Capital One and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

About 50 children in grades 1 through 3 took part in the “Literacy for Life – Choices, Character, Careers and College” program at Woodson K–8 during the week of June 11. Activities in math and reading were combined to help students learn basic financial concepts, such as how to set up checking and savings accounts, what a “bounced” check is, and how credit cards work.

Linked Learning gives recent grads a jump on public works careers

The source of our water is becoming the source of a career for several HISD graduates. Fifteen students who just graduated from Furr HS and Chávez HS were selected to partake in a three-week class on water maintenance that will result in them gaining Class D water operator licenses as well as eligibility for employment with the City of Houston Public Works Department.

The class is a part of HISD’s Linked Learning initiative, which combines academics and hands-on learning to prepare students for real-world experiences and career pathways.
