Three elementary schools designated ‘Pear-fect’ by state

Three HISD elementary schools were honored for their strong nutrition education programs with the Texas Department of Agriculture’s inaugural Pear-fection Awards.

The award was created to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of campus nutrition teams and their efforts to provide students with access to fresh produce and encourage life-long healthy habits.

Nutrition Services, military veterans join to plant seeds of hope on 9/11

As the sun rose over Mykawa Farm, Bernadette Plummer gathered with fellow military veterans to build garden beds where students can plant seeds and a gazebo to offer the young agriculturists shade from the Texas heat.

Nearby, other volunteers assembled outdoor teaching tables and a hoop house where seeds from HISD school garden will be kept warm enough to sprout in the winter.

Successful ‘Students Within Reach’ walk encourages students to return to school

Kashmere High School sophomore Floyd Young dreams of becoming a professional football player one day, but before he can play in the NFL, he knows he must return to school. Young had not been in a classroom due to the threat of COVID-19, but his mindset changed on Saturday when HISD Superintendent Millard House personally came to his home to check on him.

Along with staff, administrators, and community members, House walked door-to-door as part of the “Students Within Reach Walk” effort to reconnect with students who had not returned to school this fall.

National Merit Scholarship Program names 47 HISD seniors as semifinalists

The National Merit Scholarship Program has named 47 HISD seniors from seven schools as 2021 semifinalists.

The seniors have an opportunity to compete for approximately 7,600 scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. Nationwide there are approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

HISD employee COVID-19 vaccination opportunity

HISD is partnering with Next Level Health to provide two drive-through vaccination opportunities on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m and Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Hattie Mae White east parking lot. 

Next Level is providing the Pfizer vaccine. HISD staff who are interested in being vaccinated should register on the Next Level link below and complete the online health history and electronic consent form prior to arriving on site. Only staff members who pre-register for the COVID-19 vaccine will be able to receive the vaccination.

Cars will enter the HMW east parking lot at their scheduled time and be checked in. After receiving the vaccine, the staff person will remain in the designated waiting area for 15 minutes of monitoring.
