56 HISD students named National Merit semifinalists

Fifty-six students from six Houston ISD high schools are semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

The students, who attend Bellaire HS, Carnegie Vanguard HS, Challenge Early College HS, DeBakey HS, The High School for Performing and Visual Arts, and Lamar HS, are eligible to receive part of the $33 million pot of scholarships that will be awarded in the spring.  There are nearly 16,000 semifinalists nationwide, and about 7,600 will receive scholarships. More than 22,000 students applied by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Continue reading

HISD Names Chief High School Officer

Shonda Huery Hardman

Shonda Huery Hardman is no stranger to HISD schools. The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts graduate will bring her more than 20 years of experience and knowledge of administration to the role of Chief High School Officer. Huery Hardman, who recently served as assistant superintendent of HISD’s Futures Academy, will oversee 47 campuses with a combined enrollment of about 51,000 students.

Best Featured Performer winners from HSPVA’s Avenue Q, Kyle Legacion and Emily Scott.

Two students from the High School for Performing and Visual Arts have been honored with a Tommy Tune Award for their performance in the campus’ production of Avenue Q, School Edition.

Students Kyle Legacion and Emily Scott were jointly named best feature performer as the “Bad Idea Bears.”

Six HISD students earn national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Six Houston ISD students have won national awards for their entries in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

High School for the Performing and Visual Arts student Patrick Zapien is a gold medal art portfolio winner, which earned him a $10,000 scholarship.

Transportation department wins Telly Award for ‘School Bus Shuffle’

The Houston Independent School District Transportation Department has won bronze in the 35th Annual Telly Awards for its educational safety video titled “School Bus Shuffle.”

In honor of National School Bus Safety week in October 2013, the HISD Transportation Department created a music video that covered such topics as proper boarding procedures, how to sit on a bus and the importance of reporting bullying. Students from Peck Elementary School, Yates High School and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts were included in the video, along with district bus drivers and attendants. The district’s multimedia team filmed the video. The video has received more than 38,000 views on YouTube.

Design for new HSPVA becomes ‘more exciting and a little more real’

Architects presented design renderings and 3D images of the new High School for Performing and Visual Arts Thursday at a community meeting that provided a more detailed site plan of the five-story facility.
