Read Houston Read volunteers recognized for service to students

In 71 hours, a person can ride a bicycle from Paris, France, to Brest and back or complete 48 orbits of planet earth. For Mimie Taylor, who was honored at Thursday’s Read Houston Read Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, those 71 hours were best spent helping first-graders improve their reading skills at Garcia Elementary School.

“Tuesdays and Thursdays are dedicated to Read Houston Read and my scholars,” said Taylor brightly.

Reagan HS educator spotlighted for great instructional practices

Reagan High School English teacher Ina Knight was recently “Caught in the Act” of great instruction during a lesson on the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet. An HISD video crew, along with Secondary Curriculum and Development Officer Annie Wolfe, surprised Knight and her students and captured the video below.

Enrolling in community college is simple, thanks to ABC-13

ABC-13 is hosting a one-day, community college registration drive from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 15, in partnership with the Texas Gulf Coast Community College Consortium. Experts from nine member colleges — Lee College, Wharton County Junior College, San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, College of the Mainland, Galveston College, Alvin Community College, Lone Star College, and Brazosport College — will be on hand in a live webchat to answer questions.

Carnegie Vanguard ranked sixth best high school in nation

Carnegie Vanguard High School has been ranked as the sixth best high school in the country, according to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2015 Best High Schools rankings. Last year, the school was ranked 23rd on the prestigious list.

Two additional Houston Independent School District schools were ranked in the top 100 — DeBakey High School for Health Professions, which was ranked 23rd, and Eastwood Academy, which came in at 53rd. Continue reading →

Young Audiences of Houston’s celebrated their 59th year of providing arts education to the Houston area at their annual gala on May 7, where they presented Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy (YWCPA) and Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men (MLCPA) with 2015 Arts Empowerment Awards.

Peck Elementary to get a big surprise on May 14 Ellen show

Tune in at 3 p.m. on KHOU-TV Channel 11 to find out what it is

A KHOU-TV Channel 11 news report that aired late last month on Peck Elementary School has resulted in a big surprise for the campus and its principal—and some public recognition on a popular TV show.

Ellen DeGeneres, the host of the daytime talk show of the same name, heard about the district’s Homeless Outreach Center housed there through that broadcast, and she reached out to Principal Carlotta Brown to see if she could feature the school on the show.

Tune in to Channel 11 (KHOU-TV) to The Ellen DeGeneres Show at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, to see what happened next—including the big surprise that will help Brown serve her students even better.

HISD superintendent receives national communications award

Dr. Grier honored by NSPRA for effective community partnerships, engagement practices

051215_grier300The National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) has awarded HISD Superintendent Terry Grier the 2015 Bob Grossman Leadership in School Communications Award. The award recognizes a practicing superintendent of schools for outstanding leadership in school public relations and communications. The award will be presented on July 14 at the NSPRA National Seminar in Nashville, Tenn.

“From the multi-channeled communication program that has been established in Houston ISD to the authentic engagement, transparency, and accountability at all levels, there is no question that Terry Grier leads by example and ‘walks the walk’ in supporting strategic communication as a management function,” said NSPRA Executive Director Rich Bagin.

HISD, Arts Access Initiative partnership to expand arts education in 11 schools

The Houston Independent School District and the City of Houston’s Arts Access Initiative joined forces Tuesday to announce a new partnership that will provide additional arts education programs at 10 elementary schools and one middle school.

The partnership will directly connect schools to area arts organizations, providing 7,000 students with hands-on, arts-related experiences both in and out of the classroom.
