HISD Transportation seeking top-notch drivers, attendants to join its team

HISD Transportation Department is rolling out its latest recruitment campaign, seeking out the best school bus drivers and attendants to join its nationally recognized team for the upcoming school year.

The department has been hard at work this summer searching for candidates to join its staff of 1,200 employees responsible for safely ferrying about 34,000 students to and from school each day.

PowerUp initiative receives national curriculum award 

Cross-functional collaboration at HISD honored by Council of the Great City Schools

powerUp award (2)Various departments and members of Team HISD were recently recognized by the Council of the Great City Schools for their collaboration on PowerUp—the district’s initiative to digitally transform teaching and learning.

HISD was presented with the Making Strides Together Curriculum Award for Excellence in Urban Education at a luncheon July 10, at the Council’s Academic, Information Technology and Research Conference held in Palm Beach, Florida.

The Houston Independent School District Police Department and a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies hosted a public meeting this week as part of the department’s re-accreditation process.

The meeting provided community members the opportunity to voice comments about the department’s compliance with applicable standards or other significant issues. It was attended by about 15 people, most of whom were HISD Police employees. Only two attendees spoke, and both noted how hard the department had worked to become reaccredited. Continue reading

Crystal Rae is known to her second-grade students at Kelso Elementary as Ms. Rae, but to the theater world, she is just Crystal. Her new play, “Lamariya,” is having its world premiere at Jewel Box Theatre, part of the Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York City from July 19 to 24, 2016. She is the first Houstonian to have a play produced there.

Students from private school in China welcomed at two HISD elementary schools

Fifth- and sixth-graders from the Dalian Mingxing School in China were welcomed to two HISD schools on Monday, where students interacted in classrooms and shared their educational experiences.

At Dogan and Elmore elementary schools, students participated in various activities together, including yoga, dance, and computer exercises.

More than two dozen HISD students spend memorable week in nation’s capital 

Thanks to Washington, D.C.’s Workshops Foundation and The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, 27 HISD students spent a week in the nation’s capital learning about leadership, civic education, domestic and global politics, and American culture.

Brandi Lira named new principal of Eastwood Academy

Brandi Lira, Eastwood Academy (Houston Independent School District)Brandi Lira has been selected as the new principal of Eastwood Academy, where she has been the dean of students for the past three years. Growing up, she attended HISD schools and graduated from the High School for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice (now the High School for Law and Justice). 

Mrs. Lira has a bachelor of arts in philosophy from the University of Houston. After teaching English at Austin High School, she returned to school and earned a masters degree in educational administration. Three years later, she became the ninth-grade assistant principal at Austin.

 

Paula Pierre named new principal of Fonville Middle School

(Dave Einsel/Houston ISD)Paula Pierre has been selected as the new principal of Fonville Middle School.  Ms. Pierre has served HISD in various capacities for more than 10 years, including principal of Alcott Elementary School most recently, assistant principal of Burbank Middle School, and as a district middle-school literacy specialist. 

She holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Houston and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University.

 

Students receive scholarships, iPads, Target shopping spree  

Foundation led by ex-NFL player, Madison HS grad Moran Norris continues commitment to HISD students for 11th year

Thanks to the Moran Norris Foundation’s “Shopping for Good Character” program, 150 HISD middle-school students won a $100 shopping spree at Target in May. The students were selected by their teachers for great character, as well as excellent attendance. Of those students, six received iPads for their essays on good character. Another six students won athletics scholarships for college.

The foundation handed out the awards at its 10th-anniversary fundraising gala, “Follow Me to the Stars,” in late June. In addition, HISD representatives presented Moran and Tamara Norris with a Certificate of Recognition for their outstanding support of HISD students over the years with scholarships, charitable initiatives, and the “Shopping for Good Character” program.

HISD Police Department to host public forum as part of national re-accreditation process

The Houston Independent School District Police Department and a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies will host a public forum next week as part of the department’s re-accreditation process.

It has been 13 years since the department first achieved accreditation, becoming the only school district police department in the nation to achieve such a feat. This summer, the department is seeking its fourth renewal of the designation, and they need your input.
