Students meet leaders of their campus’ namesake

Signature_400Sixth-graders from the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan got a big treat during the last week of regular school.

They made a visit to the Baylor campus, where they listened to a speech given by Dr. Kenneth Mattox, asked questions of a panel of medical students, watched an anatomy presentation, and took a tour of the Michael E. DeBakey Museum and Library.

Dr. Paul Klotman, the president and CEO of Baylor, took time out of his day to greet the students, one of whom asked for his autograph (pictured).

Project Advisory Teams for Madison and Jordan high schools participated in a two-day workshop last week to put together initial design concepts for the schools’ new 21st century campuses.The design workshop, known as a charrette, marks the threshold from the planning to design phase of the two building projects.

Garden Oaks, Washington students team up to launch rocket

GOES_BTW_Rocket_400Students from Garden Oaks Montessori collaborated with students from Washington High School’s engineering magnet program over the past school year to design and fabricate a payload for the One Mile-One Pound Rocket Challenge.

After their teachers were connected through a mutual colleague, students from both schools began researching, designing, building, and testing a stable rocket capable of attaining a height of one mile with a one pound payload that could be recovered safely.

STEM teacher wins Elizabeth Brand Memorial Award

Taryn Trotter, a STEM teacher at Lockhart Elementary School, has been named one of five recipients of the Elizabeth Brand Teacher Excellence Award for 2015 by the Houston Association of Professional Landmen.

This award has been given out annually by that organization for almost 30 years to recognize outstanding teaching performance and all-around personal development.

Trotter was selected in part due to the individualized attention she provides her students, many of whom come from broken homes and are economically challenged. Continue reading →

Bellaire HS team wins National Personal Finance Challenge

Four students from Bellaire High School have been named the national champions of the 2015 National Personal Finance Challenge, after beating out more than 22 other teams to earn the title.

The competition took place in Kansas City on May 22, and students Christina Mao, Kenneth Yu, Claire Weddle, and Akash Shukla placed first, second, third, and fifth (respectively) in the country on individual tests before advancing to the third round of the competition, which was a team event.

A high school diploma looks better when it’s next to an associate’s degree.

That’s why several HISD campuses offer students the opportunity to obtain an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree from Houston Community College while they’re still in high school. More than 300 HISD seniors met the challenge this year, enabling them to graduate with an associate’s degree as well as a diploma.

The 2015 winners of the African American National Spelling Bee Championships visited the Texas State Capitol on May 12, 2015, to be honored for their accomplishments. Two of the three champion spellers were HISD students.

Flooding spurs HISD community members to take action

Educators at two HISD elementary schools have stepped up to handle the effects of the recent flooding, each in their own way.

On May 26, Steven Shannon, a music teacher at Lyons Elementary School, saved a woman from drowning.

Shannon was on a walk when he noticed that Glenda Reynolds was trapped in her car by the rising water in the underpass beneath Shepherd Drive. Shannon and three other Good Samaritans swam out and extricated Reynolds and her dog from the vehicle. Continue reading →

Wilkins Pavilion parking tips for upcoming graduation ceremonies

Students from Kashmere, North Forest, Booker T. Washington and Wheatley high schools will hold graduation ceremonies this weekend at Mark Anthony Wilkins Pavilion, located next to Forest Brook Middle School at 7525 Tidwell Road.

In order to facilitate a smooth graduation day, HISD officers will help direct traffic and parking. The officers will be there ensure the safety of all graduates and their families.
