Bellaire HS students weigh in on updated designs for new school

Students at Bellaire High School on Monday heard from the project architect during a lunchtime meeting sponsored by the student council about the latest plans for the school’s new 21st century campus.

Planning and design for 2012 bond schools in final groups is ahead of schedule

HISD’s project teams are moving forward ahead of schedule with the planning and design of 21st century campuses in the last two groups of schools being renovated or rebuilt under the 2012 bond program.

As part of the process, Project Advisory Teams (PATs) made up of teachers, parents, students, community representatives, architects and staff, have been formed at each school and have begun meeting monthly. This puts Group 3 schools about six months ahead and Group 4 schools about 12 months ahead of schedule.

Hundreds of students spent a part of their Saturday at Chávez High School’s STEM Symposium on Nov. 15.

Thirty education and STEM-industry professionals, including former astronaut Dr. Bonnie Dunbar and HISD Board of Education member Manuel Rodriguez, spoke about the importance of a STEM education and encouraged students to take classes related to science, technology, engineering, and math to prepare to enter a highly technical work force. Carnegie Vanguard HS celebrates different cultures at International Festival

Hundreds turned out for Carnegie Vanguard High School’s third annual International Festival on Nov. 19.

The festival, which was held after school, featured all sorts of games, crafts and food from different countries. There were also cultural fashion and performance shows. Continue reading

District’s Montessori schools provide students with independent, purposeful collaboration

Montessori is a child-centered educational approach that emphasizes independent, purposeful work and collaborative exploration. At Blackshear Elementary School, classrooms are equipped with tools to encourage “discovery” of concepts by using materials rather than by instruction from a teacher. The teacher guides the learning and encourages independence, freedom within limits, and a sense of order.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about Montessori is that it’s not structured, and that the kids are ‘free’ to do what they want,” says Blackshear’s magnet coordinator Madelyn Traylor. “It has a rich environment for children to explore, but concepts are taught in a sequenced manner, allowing each child to move through this sequence, and fulfill their academic needs, at their own rates and levels.” Continue reading

More HISD students to find fresh seasonal produce on the menu

Last year, HISD’s Nutrition Services department launched a pilot program at a handful of campuses to increase the selection of fresh fruits and vegetables available to students in the cafeteria at lunch.

That program was so successful that the district has expanded it this year, and a total of 26 HISD schools now regularly offer a fresh fruit and vegetable bar. Continue reading

Construction work is underway at the Worthing HS campus.

Several schools will be celebrating major construction milestones in December as they hold groundbreaking or beam-signing ceremonies for their bond projects.

The Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School is hosting a groundbreaking at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, to mark the start of work on a new $32.2 million facility in the Galleria area. The new school, located at 5440 W. Alabama, will be a K-8 campus with the goal of creating bilingual students.

All-girls engineering class learning to code, solve hacking challenges

Thirty eighth-graders in an all-girls engineering class at Clifton Middle School are learning how to write computer code and solve a series of web security and computer science challenges as part of HISD’s efforts to prepare students for college and career success in science and technology.

Eighth-grader Nancy Perez says the class has taught her how to encrypt and decrypt code, the difference between a bit versus a byte and how to group bits into bytes for efficiency, so the computer knows to send packets of information together. Continue reading

National expert assisting HISD educators on harnessing the power of Guided Reading

Some 475 HISD literary specialists, principals, and teachers packed the conference room at the Kingdom Builders Center on Nov. 13 to hear from literacy specialist Jan Richardson on “How to Harness the Power of Guided Reading.”

For two hours, Richardson shared practical suggestions and lesson plans on how to increase the impact of Guided Reading in support of Literacy By 3, HISD’s movement to have every child reading and writing with fluency by the end of grade 3. The plan calls for more than classroom work — it includes volunteers who read to students on a regular basis as part of Read Houston Read. Continue reading
