Representatives of the Houston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and Houston Community College recently toured Lora B. Peck and B.K. Bruce elementary schools to discuss partnerships with the district to promote HISD’s literacy initiative.

Bruce Principal Trealla Epps and two teachers described how partnerships affect student achievement. The educators noted that the United Way of Greater Houston’s partnership with the school has motivated students about reading by pairing first-graders with volunteers who read to them and help them complete literacy exercises.

April 5 Deadline Approaching for Magnet School Entrance Agreements

Students who have been accepted to a magnet school program for the 2013-2014 school year must sign and return the school’s entrance agreement postmarked by this Friday, April 5. On Monday, April 8, school magnet coordinators will begin making phone calls to offer spots to waitlisted students. Student positions on each school’s wait list were determined by a lottery.

Students who are still looking at school options, including waitlisted students, those who have recently moved into the district, students in private or charter schools and students who may want to apply to different types of magnet programs, are invited to attend the third annual Houston ISD School Choice Fair from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 27, at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, located at 4400 West 18th Street.

Annual ‘Hooray for Neff’ Event Showcases Young Students’ Musical and Artistic Talents

Event in collaboration with the Houston Grand Opera

What: HISD’s Neff Early Learning Center, in collaboration with the Houston Grand Opera, continues its tradition of displaying the young students’ artistic and musical talents at the annual ‘Hooray for Neff’ performance and exhibition on Thursday.  Throughout the academic year, with the support of the Houston Grand Opera, the students create art, learn how to use technology, and practice singing, dancing, and performing in preparation for this grand event.  The Houston Grand Opera provides the school with supplies and resources, as well as guest performers that work with the students on their artistic projects.

The Houston Grand Opera collaborates with the Rice University’s Center for Education for support to fund this project at Neff Early Learning Center.

Celebrating cultural diversity and heritage throughout the city of Houston is the theme for the Love Elementary School art exhibit “In the Eyes of Our Children: Houston: An American City.” which debuted Tuesday, March 26.

The exhibit, which is open to the public, features over 60 photographs by 20 Love Elementary students as part of the Pozos Art Project. Founded in spring of 2011 by Rice University Professor and photographer Geoff Winningham, the Pozos Art Project provides local students the opportunity to collectively photograph the city of Houston, cultural heritage and everyday life.

It’s decision time for students: magnet admission status letters go out March 22

Lovett Elementary is in the top three of elementary magnet schools with applications received.

Starting March 25, parents will have two weeks to let schools know where they want to send their children this fall.

Letters notifying parents of their children’s magnet application status will be mailed out starting Friday, March 22, and students who are “accepted” must indicate that they will attend their school of choice during the 2013–2014 school year by signing and returning the enclosed Student Entrance Agreement no later than Friday, April 5 (postmarked). ‘Camp Connect’ bringing effective teachers, struggling students together over Spring Break

Some educators may look at Spring Break as a time to get away from the classroom, but for School Support Officer Kim Fonteno, that week-long period is a golden opportunity to help some of the district’s lowest-performing students master critical objectives.

Garden Oaks Montessori to Host Public Montessori Educators of Texas Conference

What: The seventh annual Public Montessori Educators of Texas conference, sponsored by Friends of Montessori, will be held Friday, March 1 through Sunday, March 3 at Garden Oaks Montessori Magnet school.  The theme is Montessori: Surviving and Thriving in the Public School Setting and will feature breakout workshops for parents, teachers and educators that focus on elevating and sustaining Montessori education within the classroom and the community, and a tour of Houston’s three public Montessori schools.  The keynote speakers for the conference are author and lecturer Alfie Kohn and Dennis Schapiro, editor and publisher of the Public School Montessorian newspaper.  They will be speaking on the topics of education, parenting and human behavior.
