In support of its Literacy By 3 movement and Read Houston Read initiative, HISD has elected to extend its partnership with myON, a reading website that gives students access to thousands of titles for free.
HISD first joined forces with the myON website’s parent company, Capstone Publishing, last year as a part of the district’s summer reading program. Thousands of students took advantage of this valuable resource, and now, even more children stand to benefit from the partnership, as the contract has been extended through the end of August 2015. All are designed to get elementary and middle school students excited about science and STEM careers
The classroom at Herod Elementary School didn’t have any ring stands available, but that didn’t stop the seventh-grade science teachers in it from completing their experiment on heat and energy at the Baylor Summer Science Institute.
The two-week event, which concludes on July 25, focuses on giving elementary and middle school teachers creative ways to deliver lessons on familiar subjects. And participants displayed that same spirit of ingenuity this year in assembling an acceptable substitute for that basic piece of lab equipment—made from a wet cork, some tin foil, and a coat hanger.
Almost two dozen new principals will take the driver’s seat for the first time this fall at various HISD campuses, and the district’s New & Emerging Leaders Institute is helping to prepare them for success.
The intensive four-week training program, which started July 7, provides new and aspiring campus leaders with information on both practical matters, such as balancing budgets and analyzing data subjects, and more ethereal subjects, such as managing change, building community, and providing leadership.

Parents looking for another way to combat the dreaded “summer slide” need look no further. Think Through Math (TTM) is offering its “Texas Math—Everybody’s Doing It!” (.pdf) competition for the second year in a row.
Students in grades 3–8 can sharpen their math skills this summer by participating in the free online contest through Aug. 8—and if enough do so, HISD will retain its title as the top district in Texas. The district first took the crown in last year’s competition, with almost three times as many points as the second-place finisher.
Participating students can also win individual prizes. Each day, three will be chosen at random to receive a “Daily Dive” award—an Amazon e-gift card for passing at least two math lessons. Continue reading
HISD wants to make sure no child goes hungry this summer.
The district kicked off its Summer Meal Program recently with events at Herrera and Gallegos Elementary schools. HISD Food Services teamed up with the Texas Hunger Initiative and USDA to raise awareness about the program, which provides children ages 1 to 18 with a healthy breakfast and lunch at no cost through July 3.

The Houston Symphony is launching its annual series of free summer community family concerts throughout the Houston area, and HISD’s Booker T. Washington High School is on the list of venues.
Symphony musicians will play a program of family-friendly music celebrating composers of diverse backgrounds, ranging from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony to Ravel’s Suite from Mother Goose, conducted by Robert Franz.
