Volunteers spend afternoon at Milby HS learning more about the HUB

Houston community members and local businesses are supporting PowerUp, the district’s effort to digitally transform teaching and learning in the classroom. Recently a group of volunteers spent the afternoon side-by-side with teachers at Milby High School learning more about the HUB, the district’s new online teaching and learning platform.

HISD Instructional Technology Program Specialist Diana Bidulescu came up with the idea of having a support group of volunteers at Milby assist with the school’s recent distribution of laptops to students and its ongoing transition to digital learning. She hopes to expand the program to other HISD high schools in the future.

Five HISD employees were celebrated as March’s Employee of the month for Service Excellence at Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center on Tuesday morning during a special breakfast.

The event, hosted every month by HISD’s Chief Operating Officer Leo Bobadilla, recognizes district employees who go above and beyond to provide exceptional customer service in a safe, courteous, responsive and efficient manner. Students urged to enter art contest for Police Appreciation Week

The Houston Independent School District Police Department will be hosting an art contest on May 11-15 for Police Appreciation Week.

The department is asking third- through fifth-grade students to showcase their artistic skills on the theme of law enforcement. Some ideas may include:

  • Highlighting any HISD campus officer, patrol officer, K-9, bike patrol, or honor guard
  • Honoring a relative that is in law enforcement
  • The importance of law enforcement
  • The different types of police officers, such as federal, state, county or municipal
  • Appreciation of any police occupations
  • Entry qualifications to become a police officer

Highly effective teachers invited to ‘Experience HISD’ on March 14

To advance its vision of Becoming #GreatAllOver, and its commitment to placing a highly effective teacher in every classroom, the Houston Independent School District (HISD) will host its fourth annual Experienced Teacher Fair from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., on Saturday, March 14, 2015. This interactive information session is open to all experienced teachers from outside of the district who have a proven track record of success.

Yates High School of Communications students traveled to Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) to participate in Prairie View A&M Mass Communications Week on Friday, Feb. 27, 2015.

Former BET (Black Entertainment Television) anchor and reporter Ed Gordon hosted a session just for Yates students during which he discussed the media industry and what they need to do to stay competitive. Students also toured the PVAMU television station.

Pre-K and first-graders at Walnut Bend Elementary celebrated the love of reading Monday with the help of volunteers from Phillips 66 and the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation. The day marked the birthday of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, and was National Read Across America Day.

Hispanic Parent Summit to offer free workshops and resources for families

HISD District IX Board Trustee Wanda Adams has partnered with the Family Learning Academy to host the District IX Hispanic Parent Summit from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at Anderson Elementary School (5727 Ludington 77035). The free event will connect families with resources that support student success.

The event will feature panels, workshops, and a community resource fair with information for parents on topics such as helping English as a Second Language (ESL) students at home, developing young children’s literacy, getting involved in the school community, and paying for college. Raul Peimbert, Emmy award-winning Univision news anchor, will provide the keynote address, and HISD Trustee Juliet Stipeche will facilitate a panel on HISD resources. Continue reading →

It’s on to regional hoop quarterfinals for five HISD teams

Five HISD boys’ basketball teams will play Monday and Tuesday in the University Interscholastic League regional quarterfinals.

Defending state champions Yates will see the tipoff for their games against Pflugerville at 6 p.m. Monday at Rudder High School in Bryan. The game was postponed from the weekend because of weather that made driving hazardous.
