HISD’s Business Operations Department is hard at work behind the scenes on its new customer service initiative, which is geared to maximize the positive impact district employees can have on their customers.

Over the past several months, the department has hosted Service Excellence training workshops for both managers and employees. During the sessions, employees learn key elements that affect the customer service experience and tools to improve the experience through the eyes of students, parents, teachers, administrators and the greater HISD community of businesses and neighborhoods.

Business professionals inspire HISD students to think beyond a bachelor’s degree

As high school students across HISD are deciding which college to attend next fall, students at Eastwood Academy are learning that a bachelor’s degree will only take them so far.

Planning and design for 2012 bond schools in final groups is ahead of schedule

HISD’s project teams are moving forward ahead of schedule with the planning and design of 21st century campuses in the last two groups of schools being renovated or rebuilt under the 2012 bond program.

As part of the process, Project Advisory Teams (PATs) made up of teachers, parents, students, community representatives, architects and staff, have been formed at each school and have begun meeting monthly. This puts Group 3 schools about six months ahead and Group 4 schools about 12 months ahead of schedule.

Carnegie Vanguard HS celebrates different cultures at International Festival

Hundreds turned out for Carnegie Vanguard High School’s third annual International Festival on Nov. 19.

District’s Montessori schools provide students with independent, purposeful collaboration

Montessori is a child-centered educational approach that emphasizes independent, purposeful work and collaborative exploration. At Blackshear Elementary School, classrooms are equipped with tools to encourage “discovery” of concepts by using materials rather than by instruction from a teacher. The teacher guides the learning and encourages independence, freedom within limits, and a sense of order.

“One of the biggest misconceptions about Montessori is that it’s not structured, and that the kids are ‘free’ to do what they want,” says Blackshear’s magnet coordinator Madelyn Traylor. “It has a rich environment for children to explore, but concepts are taught in a sequenced manner, allowing each child to move through this sequence, and fulfill their academic needs, at their own rates and levels.” Continue reading
