Girls in STEM mentor program empowers HISD middle schoolers

The Girls in STEM program recently concluded its successful 10-week mentoring program intended to inspire middle school girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The program is a collaboration sponsored by bp and Infosys Foundation USA, and engaged students from HISD’s West Briar Middle School, providing them with valuable insights and hands-on experiences.

STAAR results show HISD is closing the achievement gap for all grade levels

Preliminary results for the 2023-2024 STAAR Exams show Houston Independent School District students made substantial gains in most tested subjects and grade levels.

For the STAAR Algebra I, English I, English II, Biology, and US History End of Course Exams, HISD students made substantial gains in four of five tested subjects, and in some cases far exceeded pre-COVID proficiency levels.

For grades 3-8, the most significant increases are in the number of students proficient in math and reading. Reading proficiency in all tested grades has surpassed pre-COVID levels, and HISD improved on the number of students proficient in math at every grade level.

HISD middle schoolers adventure abroad with NES Dyad Travel Program

Though most students approach the end of the school year with excitement, some HISD middle schoolers had a different, very special reason to look forward to the end of May. HISD’s Dyad Travel program gave students at NES campuses the opportunity of a lifetime to jetset across the globe for a five-day journey to Tokyo, Japan. In keeping with the Dyad model put in place in NES schools, Dyad Travel aims to expose students to as many diverse experiences as possible.

HISD senior awarded full scholarship to “Little Ivy” university

No person is born at their fullest potential. Troy Jackson, a senior at HISD’s Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy, would tell anyone that much. Jacksonnever expected greatness, but with hard work and perseverance, as well as guidance from a handful of trusted adults, he is preparing to attend Swarthmore College in the fall on a full academic scholarship.

HISD students slide into summer reading with help from Houston Astros

Excitement was in the air at Oak Forest Elementary School on Monday, June 3, and not only because it was the last Monday of the 2023-2024 school year. Annually, the Astros Foundation and Reliant Energy team up for Slide into Summer Reading, a program intended to help students avoid the “summer slide,” or the loss of academic knowledge and habits formed over the school year. The schools with the most students registered for the program by May 13 were rewarded with a Slide into Summer Reading party at their schools, and Oak Forest won in the category of large public/charter school with more than 300 registrations.
