An emotional surprise for the Teacher Appreciation Award winner from Hartsfield ES

The HISD Office of Talent presented Hartsfield Elementary School’s DeShawn Beatty with its Teacher Appreciation Award.

When Beatty realized she was being recognized for her tremendous work in the classroom, she began to cry. It’s been a tough couple of years for the first-grade teacher.

‘The Talk’ event promotes positive dialogue with community, law enforcement

As part of HISD’s ongoing effort to promote positive dialogue between youth and law enforcement Navarro Middle School hosted “The Talk” event for eighth grade boys, which featured keynote speaker Marvin Richardson, the Acting Director of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Superintendent Millard House and Harris County Precinct 2- Commissioner Adrian Garcia were also on hand.

Cullen MS students receive new mini-pitch soccer area

More than 300 students attending Cullen Middle School will be enjoying the new mini-pitch soccer area donated as part of a national partnership to support students and their athletic abilities.

“I like the way it was built,” seventh-grader Hannah Estrada said. “Playing soccer is fun. Even if you lose, you can still kick the ball and be with your friends.”

Get to know Woodson’s Teacher Appreciation Award winner

Woodson Leadership Academy principal Gina Wilkins joked that Pre-K teacher Perchanda Utley should re-sign her contract early- like right there on the spot. Utley is the latest Office of Talent Teacher Appreciation award winner. After Wilkins joked Utley needed to put pen to paper immediately, she praised her for being a “master” teacher. HISD students compete in annual MLK Oratory finals to honor Dr. King’s legacy

HISD  fourth-grader Ronnie Williams of Law Elementary School won the Foley & Lardner LLP 26th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratory Competition.

The competition invites local students to present original 3-to-5 minute speeches addressing the topic “How would Dr. King assess our progress in achieving his vision for America?”
