HISD opens Sunrise Center in revamped Re-Engagement Center

The final of seven Sunrise Centers—hubs for wellness, nutrition, and social resources for the HISD community—has opened at the former Brock Re-Engagement Center at 1417 Houston Ave. The building once housed HISD’s Student Assistance Department, and the Sunrise Center initiative built on the foundation of the services and resources that were provided there to create an all-new assistance experience for students and their families.

Mission Milby’s efforts in the East End expanded through new HISD Sunrise Center

HISD opened its third of seven Sunrise Centers at the Mission Milby on Wednesday, Oct. 18, with an activity-filled fall festival that included a vendor fair, health screenings, food, a pumpkin patch, and games and giveaways courtesy of the Houston Dynamo.

Sunrise Centers serve to centralize valuable resources for families, and in this case, those in the Milby, Chávez, and Austin High School feeder patterns. While this latest center is new for the District, Mission Milby has been serving Houston’s Greater East End for two decades.

New Sunrise Center gives homeless HISD students a safe place to land

On Monday, Oct. 9, HISD christened the Cornerstone Sunrise Center, the second of a proposed seven community centers created in partnership with existing community assistance organizations to fill specific needs for HISD students, families, and community members.

The Cornerstone Sunrise Center is located at the Star of Hope Cornerstone Community Transformational Campus, and together with Star of Hope and Buckner International will serve homeless community members by providing housing, career development, counseling, health and safety resources, and more.

Inaugural Multicultural Day celebrates the beauty in diversity

HISD’s Multilingual Programs Department hosted its inaugural Multicultural Day celebration on Saturday, May 20, at Wisdom High School. The event was the brainchild of Law Elementary fifth-grader Kadence Smith, winner of this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Speech Competition.

In partnership with the Family and Community Engagement (FACE), Special Education, College and Career Readiness, and Gifted and Talented departments, organizers worked to create an event that highlighted the incredible diversity of the district with cultural performances, a student art exhibit, guest speakers, and hands-on activities.

It’s a Game Changer: How parent participation sets schools up for success

HISD is readying to “Change the Game” with its annual Parent Organization Expo. It’s the perfect opportunity for parents to consider the benefits parent organizations provide for the schools they support and what a difference their involvement can make.

The Parent Organization Expo is set for Feb. 4, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th St., 77092). The event is a valuable launchpad for parents and caretakers who are new to their school’s parent organizations as well as an opportunity for seasoned Parent Teacher Organization/Parent Teacher Association participants to build upon their knowledge base and make useful connections to further support their schools. The expo will include fundraising strategies and workshops on effective PTO/PTA practices.

HISD launches 2022-2023 Family Friendly Schools Program

HISD’s Family and Community Engagement (FACE) Department is excited to launch the 2022-2023 Family Friendly Schools (FFS) Program. With this newly redesigned initiative, FACE will be supporting every school’s efforts to engage parents, families, and the greater Houston community and work to establish a culture of trust in order to achieve its goal of preparing students to succeed in college, career, and beyond.
