Each year, HISD honors two principals who represent the very best things that the district’s leadership has to offer. This year’s honorees, Principals Amanda Wingard and Keoshya Dunn, were recognized at their home campuses in surprise celebrations orchestrated by their students and colleagues. Superintendent Millard House II was present to present Wingard and Dunn with certificates of appreciation for their outstanding service to their schools and the HISD community.

Lamar HS principal named a finalist for Texas Secondary School Principal of the Year
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to her school and the HISD community, Lamar High School principal Rita Graves has been named one of four finalists for Texas Secondary School Principal of the Year.
Graves began her more than 20-year-long career with HISD as a first-grade teacher and reading specialist at Poe Elementary School. Her dedication to her students led her to become magnet coordinator and dean of magnet students at Pin Oak Middle School, where she championed the implementation of a Chinese language program. Graves served as principal of Pin Oak and Roberts Elementary School before taking up the mantle of principal of Lamar High School in 2018.

Houston Independent School District Superintendent Richard Carranza, along with school board members, made surprise visits to Lyons Elementary School and West Briar Middle School on Thursday to name the district’s top campus leaders of the school year.
Lyons Elementary School Principal Cecilia Gonzales was named HISD’s Elementary Principal of the Year, while West Briar Middle School Principal Keeley Simpson was selected as HISD’s Secondary Principal of the Year. Both winners will advance to the state’s regional principal of the year competition.
“I am so proud of our principals and the incredible work they do each and every day to ensure the success of their campus, students and teachers,” Carranza said. “The level of student achievement at these schools did not happen by accident.” Continue reading
Meet HISD’s 2016 Principals of the Year
The Houston Independent School District named its top campus leaders on Thursday during surprise visits made to the winning schools — Bush Elementary School and Lanier Middle School.
Bush Principal Theresa Rose was named HISD’s Elementary Principal of the Year, and Lanier Principal Felicia Adams was selected as HISD’s Secondary Principal of the Year.

Rose and Adams were among 15 elementary and 21 secondary principals vying for the distinction of HISD Principal of the Year. They learned of the award during surprise visits made on Feb. 18 to their respective campuses by HISD Deputy Superintendent and Chief Financial Officer Ken Huewitt.
“I am so proud of our principals and thrilled to have the chance to recognize them for all their hard work and dedication,” Huewitt said. “Effective principals are absolutely critical to ensuring the success of both students and teachers.”

HISD recognizes Principals of the Year
HISD recognized eight of its most respected and effective administrators on May 1, as the Principals of the Year, First Year Principals of the Year, and Assistant Principals of the Year.
The administrators were nominated by colleagues, teachers, and students for their instructional leadership and efforts to boost student achievement, and the honorees were selected for their outstanding contributions to the district and their school communities.

Assistant Principals of the Year

- Middle: Inge Garibaldi, Williams MS
- High: Opal Harrison, Milby HS
First Year Principals of the Year

Principals of the Year

Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier congratulated the administrators during a ceremony at the monthly principals’ meeting. “There’s no doubt that these administrators represent excellence in leadership,” he said. “But there are many other equally deserving principals in this room.”
HISD Names Top School Leaders for 2012
On Wednesday, May 2, HISD recognized more than five dozen school administrators for their outstanding contributions to the district and their school communities by saluting them as nominees for Principal of the Year, First Year Principal of the Year, or Assistant Principal of the Year.
The administrators were nominated by colleagues, teachers, and students for their instructional leadership and efforts to boost student achievement.
Here are the 2012 honorees:
Elementary
- Principal of the Year: Elena Martinez-Buley, Rodriguez ES
- First Year Principal of the Year: Roshanda Griffin, Whidby ES
- Assistant Principal of the Year: Terrence Sanders, Walnut Bend ES
Middle
- Principal of the Year: Noelia Longoria, Ortiz MS
- First Year Principal of the Year: Corey Seymour, McWilliams MS
- Assistant Principal of the Year: Geovanny Ponce, Hartman MS
High
- Principal of the Year: Connie Berger, Reagan HS
- First Year Principal of the Year: Jason Catchings, Scarborough HS
- Assistant Principal of the Year: Lori Lambropoulos, Westside HS
Superintendent of Schools Terry B. Grier congratulated the administrators during a ceremony at the monthly principals’ meeting. “Any one of you could have been the recipient of these awards,” he said. “That’s just the kind of talented staff we have.”
Dr. Grier also presented “Team HISD” hats to two other principals—Charles Faust (Fondren MS) and Laquetta Kennedy (Cook ES), for their exemplary efforts to meet students’ needs at their campuses.
