Raising teacher salaries in HISD is a top commitment within the district’s new, five-year strategic plan. In February, HISD announced a compensation plan with cost-of-living updates and step increases for the next three years. HISD is raising teacher salaries by 17% between now and 2024.

HISD launching RISE transformation cohort at underperforming schools

In order to meet the commitment of permanently improving every D- and F-performing campus, HISD is transforming how it serves those students by launching the RISE transformation cohort beginning in School Year 2022-2023.

Last year on the final day of school in Maria Reveles-Gonzalez’s third-grade class at Pilgrim Academy, she posted a sign that read “last day of school.” Students wrote on it what they learned that year, as well as their favorite subject. While most wrote that they enjoyed learning multiplication, one student answered, “to be confident in who she was.” That moment helped the then-first-year teacher confirm that this was where she wanted to be—at HISD.
“It was so beautiful to see that is what she took away from being in my class for one year,” Reveles-Gonzalez said.

Teacher recruitment is underway and the HISD recruitment team has been traveling to colleges across Texas and the nation to meet with students who are graduating in May and want to become teachers.
Even HISD Superintendent Richard Carranza is hitting the recruitment trail. Carranza was on hand at an April 7 recruitment event at the University of Houston.

Teachers featured in advertisement for district
If you head to the movies over Spring Break, you may see some familiar faces on the big screen.
Several HISD teachers are featured in a video advertisement to recruit teachers to the district. The 30-second spot, called “Teach in the City,” is aimed at enticing current teachers who live in Houston and the surrounding suburbs to come teach at HISD. You can watch the video below.
“Teach in the City” features a half dozen HISD teachers, including Morgan Greco, a second-year teacher at Herod Elementary School.
“I am thrilled to be part of this effort to recruit both new and veteran teachers,” Greco said. “I love working for HISD.”

As HISD works to find an effective teacher for every classroom, one of the district’s renewed focuses in on strengthen partnerships with colleges and universities to recruit and better prepare new teachers.
To help achieve this, HISD hosted representatives from several universities Wednesday to begin a discussion on how the district and higher education institutions can improve the lines of communication when it comes to teacher training and support. Among those in attendance were the University of Houston, University of Houston-Downtown, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas State, Sam Houston State, Texas Southern, Prairie View A&M, and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
Team HISD is Hiring – Early Application Deadline is March 18
HISD currently has openings for motivated teachers who are invested in making an impact on student achievement. To attract the best candidates, we are currently accepting early applications for the 2013-2014 school year. The deadline for the early application round is March 18, 2013. We are continuing to access applications for the 2012-2013 school year.
While vacancies exist in all areas, the highest need for teachers exists in critical shortage areas including bilingual (Spanish), secondary Spanish, secondary math, secondary science and specific areas in special education.

Highly effective teachers from other districts invited to “Experience HISD”
Recruiting event designed to showcase the advantages of a career with HISD to external candidates
The Recruitment and Selection team from Human Resources held an interactive info session exclusively for experienced teachers from outside the district on Feb. 11. Placing an effective teacher in every classroom is part of HISD’s plan to transform the district – called the Strategic Direction.
Almost 120 participants attended the event, which included breakout sessions on certification requirements, district benefits, and the new Teacher Development and Appraisal System.
Attendees were also invited to participate in a panel discussion with HISD school improvement officers, principals, and current veteran teachers, after which they met one-on-one with principals and representatives from 44 different schools.
