HISD students to perform speeches at annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition

Twelve Houston ISD elementary students on Friday will spread the work and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by performing self-written speeches inspired by the civil rights leader as part of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition.

The MLK Oratory competition, sponsored by Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP and held at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Christ (500 Clay St. 77002), invites fourth- and fifth-grade students to write and present a short original speech that envisions King’s message in today’s world. This year’s theme is “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”

HISD Board of Education approves construction contract to renovate Codwell ES, re-open it to students

The Houston Independent School District Board of Education last week approved a $12 million construction contract to renovate Codwell Elementary School on the district’s south side so that it could re-open for students.

The building at 5225 Tavenor Lane has been closed and vacant since the summer of 2014 when renovation work being done as part of the 2007 bond program uncovered significant moisture problems that required the students to relocate.

Grand openings planned this week for Mark White, Condit elementary schools

Mark White and Condit elementary schools will hold grand opening ceremonies this week to celebrate and showcase their new facilities, which were constructed as part of the voter-approved 2012 Bond Program.

The two new schools were among the first 2012 bond projects to be completed, opening their doors to students in time for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

The HISD Board of Education hosted more than two dozen town hall meetings that began in September as a way to introduce Carranza to the community, solicit input from stakeholders about the district’s future, and learn about key issues across HISD.

HISD elementary students announce 2016’s top toys

Fifth-grade students at Longfellow Elementary School on Tuesday announced that video games and Easy-Bake Ovens are a few of the hottest toys this holiday season after polling their classmates for their annual top toy survey.

Every year for the past 17 years, a group of fifth-graders at the school survey their classmates to determine what gifts kids would like to receive for the holidays. Fourteen students announced the top five toys for boys and girls during a press conference at the school. The goal of the survey is to help give parents and relatives an idea of what to buy before they do their holiday shopping. Continue reading →

Elementary students experience joy of competition during Special Olympics Field Day

Elementary school students took the field on Thursday during final day of the fourth annual Special Olympics Field Days at Butler Stadium. Students were able to participate in a variety of sports, including a “Future Stars” event for the youngest athletes. Middle school and high school students competed last week during their own field days. The events give students with intellectual and developmental disabilities a chance to showcase their athletic skills by taking part in fun athletic contests.

Wilson Montessori breaks ground on new addition

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new addition and renovations at Wilson Montessori School on Tuesday had all the usual celebratory elements from the obligatory shovels and hard hats to a distinguished list of speakers.

But Principal Beth Bonnette turned the morning into a teachable moment for the school’s more than 500 students when she challenged them to be part of history by contributing to a time capsule that will be placed within the walls of the new building.

Groundbreaking ceremonies planned for Wilson Montessori, Energy Institute HS

Wilson Montessori and Energy Institute High School will hold groundbreaking ceremonies in November to celebrate the start of construction on their new buildings.

The Wilson Montessori event will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. at their school campus, 2100 Yupon St. The Energy Institute event will be held Saturday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m. at the site of their new location, 3501 Southmore Blvd. Continue reading →

The Houston Independent School District announced the winners of the district’s 2016 holiday greeting card competition that features creative student artwork highlighting family holiday traditions, seasonal decorations, and classic holiday songs.

The winners – fourth-grader Angela Ramos of Ed White Elementary School, seventh-grader Annette Hernandez of Pilgrim Academy, and 11th-grader Javier Garcia of Scarborough High School – were among 40 finalists from elementary, middle, and high schools. All finalists received a boxed set of their holiday cards. Their holiday cards also will be available for purchase and on display at the HISD administration building. Continue reading →
