Parents considering Parker ES’s music program can see its advanced bands perform Oct. 18
Many HISD schools hold campus carnivals each fall to raise money for various programs and initiatives, but some also offer parents a sneak peek at their magnet programs.
Middle school parents learned about more than 40 high school programs their children can choose from at a Parent Information Night organized by the district’s Office of School Choice on Thursday at Burbank Middle School.
“It’s good to see that our students have so many opportunities at HISD,” said Rubin and Laura Precella, who attended the program with their daughter and nephew, both eighth-graders at The Rice School. “We just want to learn more about the different programs so that we can choose one that will help our children make their mark on the world.” Continue reading

More than two dozen chess club members at the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at Ryan (BCOMA@R) got an opportunity recently that not many can boast of: the chance to play against a living legend in their game of choice.
Olympic and world chess champion Susan Polgar, who was ranked the top chess player in the world as a teenager and became the first woman to earn the title of grandmaster in 1991, came to the school on Sept. 15 to take part in a “blitz”-style chess tournament as part of the Houston Rockets’ Clutch City Checkmate Challenge. New formula is designed to improve equity across programs
Next week, the HISD Board of Education will vote on a district-wide magnet funding formula that is designed to improve equity across programs and increase transparency in the magnet and specialty program funding process. These changes will be presented to the HISD Board of Education for their consideration on June 19 during a special budget meeting.
Hundreds of parents took advantage of the sunshine to head out to the School Choice Fair on Saturday, April 26, and many were surprised to find that some specialty and magnet schools still had spaces available.
Families interested in a specialized program for the 2014-2015 school year will have an opportunity to learn about 50 schools with openings at the HISD School Choice Fair. The event will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 26 at the Northwest Mall, 9500 Hempstead Highway. Continue reading
If you are looking for an HISD magnet school for the 2014-2015 school year, make sure to save the date for the spring School Choice Fair from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, April 26. Held at Northwest Mall, 9500 Hempstead Highway, the fair will host about 70 schools, all of which are actively recruiting for the next school year.

Lanier Middle School competed in the Texas UIL Region 23 contest over the weekend and came away with two big awards – sweepstakes for both the varsity and non-varsity bands.
“This particular contest is not about winning but about doing everything you are supposed to do,” Lanier band director Ali Jackson said.
