Parent University to kick off third year with virtual workshops

The Houston Independent School District will kick off its third year of Parent University on Tuesday, Sept. 15 with the first of six virtual workshops.

The workshops will connect parents and children to resources offered by the district to create successful academic careers as well as safe and healthy environments at home and at school.

HISD to hold first Parent University of spring semester 

HISD will host its fourth Parent University workshop from 5:15 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at two district locations: Key Middle School and Lamar High School. 

The theme for the session will be “Attendance Matters.” The workshop will begin with a dinner and resource fair and will include information on district programs, parent engagement, community resources, and how parents can become active partners in the successful education of their children.

New Parent University session scheduled for Nov. 19 

HISD will host its next Parent University workshop from 5:15 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at four locations throughout the district: Oak Forest and Emerson elementary schools, Thomas Middle School and Furr High School. 

The theme for the session will be “Digital Citizenship.” The workshop will begin with a dinner and resource fair and will include information on district programs, parent engagement, community resources, and how parents can become active partners in the successful education of their children.  

This district-wide initiative was launched last September with a mission of connecting HISD parents and children to resources that support successful academic careers, as well as safe and healthy environments at home and at school.

New Parent University session scheduled for Oct. 15 

HISD will host its next Parent University workshop from 5:15 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at four locations throughout the district: Cook Elementary School, Lawson and Pershing middle schools, and Westside High School. 

The theme for the session will be “How to Get Involved.” The workshop will begin with a dinner and resource fair and will include information on district programs, parent engagement, community resources, and how parents can become active partners in the successful education of their children. 

Parents can look up locations and select the most convenient one to attend. Registration is available at HoustonISD.org/ParentUniversity

Free dinner, interpretation services, and child care will be provided.

The Houston Independent School District will kick off its second year of Parent University on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at all district campuses.

The workshops will connect parents and children to resources offered by the district to create successful academic careers as well as safe and healthy environments at home and at school. 

A variety of district and community program representatives and experts will be available for parents to connect with individually. After the districtwide event on Sept. 17, Parent University workshops will take place monthly at geographically dispersed locations at 5:15 p.m. as follows:

HISD holds final Parent University of the school year

HISD held its fifth and final Parent University workshop on Thursday evening, capping off a successful first year for the districtwide initiative.  

“Parent University has been a great opportunity for you, as parents, to get know us as a district,” Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan told the crowd at Madison High School. “It’s important that you know all of the options that are available to your children in this district.   

The workshop was held at Madison and three locations: Furr, Northside and Westside high schools. The theme for the session was “Getting Your Child Ready for College and Careers.” In honor of the final workshop of the school year, HISD’s Family & Community Engagement Office awarded four $500 college scholarships to students in attendance, including Madison senior Jairo Miranda, who will be attending Universal Technical Institute in the Fall.

Final Parent University session scheduled for March 28  

HISD will host its fifth and final Parent University workshop from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 28 at four locations throughout the district: Furr, Northside, Madison and Westside high schools. 

The theme for the session will be “Getting Your Child Ready for College and Careers.” The workshop will begin with a dinner and resource fair and will include information on district programs, parent engagement, community resources, and how parents can become active partners in the successful education of their children.

HISD will host its fourth Parent University workshop from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at five locations throughout the district: Revere Middle School, and Chavez, Kashmere, Worthing and Challenge Early College high schools.

Parent University helps Wisdom HS mom lead the way for new PTO 

Armed with a fresh notebook and pens for jotting notes, Wisdom High School parent Erica Alvarado bounced from table to table at Thursday night’s second Parent University session, gathering as much information and resources as she could.

Alvarado’s mission was twofold: Learn as much as possible to help support her children’s education, and pass along resources to fellow parents serving on Wisdom’s newly minted PTO, for which she is president.
