HISD counselors gather for 2024 Counselors’ Appreciation Meeting

Feb. 5-9 marked National School Counseling Week, a time for school communities to come together in appreciation and recognition of the important contributions of our tireless school counselors. This year’s National School Counseling Week theme is “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused.” From class schedules to emotional regulation, all the way to choosing and applying to college, school counselors are a vital resource on a student’s educational journey.

HISD’s top student-athletes signed letters of intent at the District’s annual National Signing Day ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

Friends, families, educators, and coaches packed Delmar Fieldhouse to support their athletes and celebrate their commitment to compete at the collegiate level and continue their education.

HISD Board of Managers approves 2024-2025 school calendar

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Managers approved the 2024-2025 academic calendar. It provides more learning time than HISD students have had in the past – an increase from 172 instructional days to 180. Research indicates that students benefit from more time in school.

Special Dyad partnerships connect students to a community that cares

HISD students at NES and NES-A campuses regularly enjoy the unique experience of learning from the community members who teach their Dyad courses. Now community partners are helping enhance those experiences for students.

Volunteers from Home Depot’s Team Depot and Nike Community Ambassadors came to Atherton Elementary and Key Middle School, respectively, to support Dyad classes in a school garden beautification project and a trainer-led field day.

The first full week of February is National School Counseling Week, a time to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of our school counselors.

This year’s theme is School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused, speaking to the high standard of services that HISD’s counseling teams provide all year long. The mission of the HISD Counseling and Student Services Department is to ensure that scholars develop into lifetime learners and to advocate for their academic success and social-emotional well-being.

Hogg and BCMA Ryan Middle Schools celebrate national magnet certifications

Students and staff at Hogg Middle School and Baylor College of Medicine Academy (BCMA) at Ryan Middle School know their schools are special, and now they have national recognition. Both HISD campuses have met the criteria to become nationally certified by Magnet Schools of America.

Hearts and Harvests: MLK Day of Service with HISD Nutrition Services

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr., HISD’s Nutrition Services Department hosted 86 students at the Food and Agriculture Literacy Center at Mykawa Farm for a day of volunteering, learning, and strategizing to combat food insecurity in the HISD community on Saturday, Jan. 13. Attendees included students from Stevenson Middle School, Kashmere, Wheatley, and Worthing High School students in the Miles Ahead Scholars program, as well as the Texas A&M 4-H Global Leadership Beyond Education (G.L.O.B.E.) program.

Carnegie Vanguard earns top spot in Children at Risk’s annual rankings

The research and advocacy nonprofit Children at Risk released its annual school rankings with several Houston ISD campuses earning top spots. For the 2022-2023 school year, HISD’s Carnegie Vanguard High School was ranked the number one public high school in the Greater Houston area.
