HISD believes in teaching students the value of their civic duty. Every year, the district makes a concentrated effort to help eligible students register to vote. This year, during the first week of school, volunteers with the Texas League of Women Voters (LWV) visited every HISD high school to support that effort.

The Houston Independent School District will provide free breakfast and lunch to students in the Community Eligibility Provision Program (CEP) for the 2022-2023 school year, but all parents/caregivers will still need to fill out a new socioeconomic form (SIF).
It can be completed online via the HISD Parent Portal or submitted in a paper form to their campus.

Jennifer Moreno had always been interested in computers. She even served as the secretary of Sam Houston MSTC High School’s computer hardware team, Skills USA. At the time, she hadn’t considered specializing in software.
HISD had just rolled out an SAP internship. Although specified as available only to seniors, Moreno was encouraged by her former teacher, Eduardo Cantu, and internship recruiter, Ty Matthews, to apply as a junior.

HISD is offering free drive-thru PCR COVID-19 testing on August 19, 20, and 27 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Testing will be available for HISD staff, students, and members of their households. The program is offered in partnership with the Houston Health Department and Fulgent Genetics.

The ratings are in, and the Houston Independent School District has made significant academic gains since the last time letter grades were given by the Texas Education Agency.
HISD earned a solid B+ from the TEA and maintained its overall 88 rating from 2019. The TEA did not give grades the last two academic years as school districts navigated the pandemic.

Houston Independent School District will continue its policy to operate the Community Eligibility Provision Program (CEP) under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2022-2023 school year.
Schools qualifying to operate CEP serve breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge and eliminate the collection of meal applications for free, reduced-price, and paid student meals. This approach reduces burdens for both families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.
