EMERGE SAT boot camp aims to boost scores, student dreams

Across the U.S., thousands of high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors buy books, attend seminars and complete online tutorials in hopes of boosting their SAT scores. This year, HISD EMERGE fellows hope to boost their scores by attending an intensive SAT boot camp which provides test strategies and content-based instruction. In past years, the program has led to significant increases in scores on the critical reading, mathematics and writing sections of the SAT.

Bellaire HS debate coach receives two big honors

School may technically be out, but it’s been a busy summer for Jay Stubbs, Bellaire High School’s speech and debate coach. He took a team to nationals, was inducted into the National Forensic League Hall of Fame and received the Texas Bar Association’s Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence in Law Focused Education – all in June!

“Being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame and receiving this award from the Texas Bar Association mean so much to me,” Stubbs said. “How lucky I am to receive awards on behalf of the successes of so many of my students.”

Madison HS Teacher Named KBR Science Teacher of the Year

Madison High School’s Vladimir Gonzalez Lopez (right) was named the 2014 KBR Science Teacher of the Year. With him is last year’s second place winner, Samuel Saenz.

Vladimir G. Lopez, a physics teacher at Madison High School, isn’t interested in spoon-feeding his students their lessons.

“Science is a process,” he said, “And you can’t expect anybody to give you the answers. Students have to do the experiments and try new things, because that’s what they’re going to need when they’re doing real science.”

It’s precisely that commitment to cultivating students’ own investigative skills that has made Lopez the first-place winner in KBR’s fifth annual science awards program. The contest was created in 2009 to recognize new and effective models of instruction that emphasize the scientific method and critical thinking skills.

Bellaire HS students win National Economics Challenge

A group of Bellaire High School students skipped their prom to compete in the National Economics Challenge and won!

Seniors Patrick Giradet, Ridge Liu, Laura Zhang and Jinchen Zou flew to New York City for the quiz bowl, which aired live on CNBC on Monday. In addition to receiving a trophy, the team was awarded the honor of ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

Nine CTE students awarded Wilbern Heritage scholarships

Nine HISD students from three southwest Houston high schools will be awarded Wilbern Heritage scholarships at a ceremony on Thursday, May 15. The Wilbern Heritage Scholarship is awarded to Career and Technology Education (CTE) students who attend classes for part of the day, then spend the rest of the day at jobs or internships.

10 HISD seniors win National Merit Scholarships

Ten seniors from three Houston ISD high schools received a little help paying for college, thanks to National Merit Scholarships worth $2,500 each.

The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors who appraised the finalists’ academic records, scores from two standardized tests, contributions and leadership in school and community activities, submitted essays and recommendations from high school officials.

Six HISD students earn national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Six Houston ISD students have won national awards for their entries in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

High School for the Performing and Visual Arts student Patrick Zapien is a gold medal art portfolio winner, which earned him a $10,000 scholarship.

‘Eagles’ symposium encourages students to soar with STEM courses

Hundreds of middle and high school students learned about science, technology, engineering, and math careers at a symposium organized by the Gathering of Eagles and the Houston Military Affairs Committee.

A variety of speakers working in STEM-related careers, including a geologist at NASA, encouraged about 375 students in attendance at the Saturday event at Houston Community College Southeast. They came from schools including Austin, Bellaire, Davis, and Milby high schools and Deady, Hartman, Ortiz, and Stevenson middle schools and heard about exploring science and math courses and considering the engineering profession.

Lights, camera, PowerUp at Bellaire HS!

Bellaire High School students and staff are sharing their personal insights regarding the district’s PowerUp technology initiative in a new, student-produced video.  Molly Oretsky, Iceland Vu, and Anthea Wilson, who work on Bellaire’s student newspaper and website, Three Penny Press, filmed the recent distribution of student laptops on their campus and interviewed students and staff on how the devices are changing classroom instruction.

Bellaire is one of 11 high schools in phase one of PowerUp, which eventually will give every HISD high school student a laptop to use at school and at home.

Bellaire HS dance team wins national title

Bellaire High School’s eMotion Dance Company took home the title at the Crowd Pleasers National Showcase of Champions at the Berry Center in northwest Harris County on March 22.

The team, which has a total of 35 male and female dancers, won the national title and choreography award in the hip-hop category. Bellaire HS dance teacher Sanja Korman said senior Pierre Phillips created the choreography.
