Nation’s report card sheds light on COVID-19 impacts on students in core education subjects

The 2022 National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) released data highlighting national declines based on fourth and eighth grade math and reading assessments administered in the spring of 2022. The nationwide assessment included a sample of 5,400 fourth and eighth grade Houston Independent School District students from 107 campuses. A total of 216,500 fourth grade students from 5,550 schools and 215,700 eighth grade students from 5,010 schools participated in the nationwide administration of NAEP in 2022.

Teach Plus names 11 HISD educators to its state policy fellowship cohort

The national nonprofit Teach Plus has selected 45 Texas teachers to be a part of its 2022-2023 Policy Fellowship cohort, and 11 of them are from HISD.

DeBakey HS celebrates 50 years of education for health professions

HISD’s DeBakey High School opened in 1972 and was the first high school for health professions in the country. This year, the school and its alumni are celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The celebrations will feature career presentations from 50 DeBakey High School alumni and several events coordinated by parents and alumni.

51 HISD seniors named semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship Program

The National Merit Scholarship Program has selected 51 Houston Independent School District seniors as semifinalists for the 2022-2023 scholarship competition year.

The scholarship program gives seniors the opportunity to compete for about 7,250 monetary scholarships to help jumpstart their college careers.

HISD hosts early voting location for Nov. 8 election

Early voting for the 2022 November General Election will be held at Delmar Stadium, 2020 Mangum Road, 77092.

Anyone who is registered to vote in Harris County may vote early at this location beginning Monday, Oct. 24, through Friday, Nov. 4.

Year two of 50 Cent-backed G-Unity Foundation means big business for HISD students

Last school year saw the launch of the G-Unity Business Lab, backed by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his foundation, at three HISD high schools.

Memory of Josue Flores lives on in new bus shelter outside Northside HS

It’s been six years since Marshall Middle School student Josue Flores was killed walking home from school. This past May, he would have graduated from Northside High School.

To commemorate what would have been his commencement, METRO has dedicated a new bus shelter in his name outside the high school.

LGBTQ+ students embrace their identities in celebration of National Coming Out Day

First marked in 1988 to commemorate the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, National Coming Out Day is a day of awareness observed annually on Oct. 11. The day exists as a reminder to the LGBTQ+ community and their allies that coming out and sharing their stories is a powerful, personal, and impactful thing—whether they choose to do so on National Coming Out Day or any other day of the year.
