Superintendent House charts a brighter future for HISD

“Hope” and “faith” were words shared by a community member during one of the 16 Listen & Learn town halls used to describe her vision of the district’s future.

The future of HISD is currently being mapped out after feedback from students, parents, teachers, and community members, as well as input from elected officials, partners, and area leaders.

Superintendent Millard House, who has reached 100 days as the leader of the largest school district in Texas, said he’s spent his whole life preparing for this challenge.

HISD extends application deadline for Student Teacher Corps to Jan. 12

In response to the unique challenges presented by COVID-19, HISD is partnering with iEducate to hire up to 500 college readiness mentors as tutors through a new initiative called Student Teacher Corps.

All HISD students and alumni ages 15 through college are invited to apply for this paid opportunity. The purpose of this program is to address gaps in learning widened by the pandemic at 50-plus elementary schools in need, all while helping students interested in the field of education gain valuable hands-on teaching experience.

HISD bus drivers celebrate National School Bus Safety Week with superintendent

The sun strained through high, wispy clouds, beaming bright yellow warmth onto the windows of school buses that streamed into the bus terminal, returning from safely transporting students.

At all district locations, HISD Transportation Services is observing National School Bus Safety Week to raise awareness among students, staff, and the community about the importance of school bus safety – inside and outside the school bus.

HISD to double extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials

To recognize the importance of eliminating pandemic-related learning loss, the HISD is doubling extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials for students.

Effective the week of Nov. 1, 2021, the extra-duty pay for teachers providing academic tutorials will increase from $25 to $50 per hour. The extra-duty pay rate for non-tutorial tasks will remain $25 per hour.

Hip-hop legend 50 Cent’s G-Unity Business Lab to help HISD youth

On Monday, the hip-hop world and HISD came together to help give back to the community at two separate events. At Wheatley High School, one of the biggest rap stars of the 2000s, 50 Cent, took his philanthropic efforts to HISD with the G-Unity Business Lab Kickoff.

HISD Superintendent to host town halls to seek community feedback

In a series of community town hall meetings, Superintendent Millard House II will be seeking feedback from parents, employees, and other community members about the future of Houston Independent School District.

The town hall-style meetings will be hosted around the district by the nine Board of Education trustees, with additional meetings for parents of Special Education students and PTO members by invitation only, as well as a virtual meeting. The goal of these meetings is rooted in Superintendent House’s 90 Day Plan, where he stated a need to listen to the community about issues surrounding the district.

Judge upholds mask mandates in Texas schools

 A Travis County judge says the Houston Independent School District can continue mandating masks to protect students and staff from COVID-19.

The judge’s ruling extends a temporary restraining order banning Governor Greg Abbott from enforcing his prohibition on mask mandates in Texas schools.

HISD Wraparound Services supports students, families

Wesley Elementary School Principal Thomas Cotter proudly showed Superintendent Millard House around the school’s Parent Center, where families in need can come to get uniforms, school supplies, food, and even computer access.

The center is supported by HISD Wraparound Services, which provides HISD students the non-academic supports—like access to mental and physical health professionals, food, and housing—necessary for them to be successful in school.
