Learn the roads traveled by HISD’s newest leaders to reach our campuses

Did you know that one of HISD’s newest principals has actually met the queen of England? Or that another once jumped out of an airplane? How about the one who took 17 years to finally propose to his girlfriend? Or the one whose grandfather was in the circus?

Almost two dozen new campus leaders will take the driver’s seat for the first time this fall at various HISD schools, and to help parents, students, and their new colleagues get to know them a bit better, we asked each to tell us a little about their background, pick three adjectives to describe themselves, and reveal something people might not know just by looking at them. Waltrip HS band gets effusive shout out from Georgia State band director

(Houston Independent School District)It’s not every day that a judge at a music competition reaches out to a high school principal to offer praise for his or her students’ performance, but that’s exactly what happened to Andria Schur after a group of her students from Waltrip High School returned from the Dixie Classic Festival held last month in Atlanta.

Schur received a highly complimentary email from Robert Ambrose, the director of bands at Georgia State University, after he served as an adjudicator and clinician for the Waltrip High School Concert Band.

Creatures from the deep: Workshop teaches underwater robotics

Nearly a dozen students spent part of their weekend at an underwater robotics workshop at Waltrip High School. Three teams of students from Waltrip, Washington, and the Energy Institute high schools built underwater robots essentially from scratch.

The students had to strip wire, solder, make electrical connections, read a mechanical schematic, measure and cut pipe, drill holes, make physical connections, while going from a drawing to a 3D structure, and create a variety of larger assemblies from individual parts.
