Art students from Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School teamed up recently with Nutrition Services to create the artwork for seed packets the department will distribute to the public.
The collaboration was the brainchild of Nan Cramer, Nutrition Services community outreach dietitian. Cramer, who was familiar with the school’s art program, thought the custom illustrations would add a unique touch to the seed packets. Continue reading

Kashmere High School stakeholders gathered Tuesday to celebrate the grand opening of their new 21st century campus, which underwent major renovations as part of HISD’s voter-approved 2012 Bond Program.
Students, staff, alumni, and various dignitaries crowded into the large, brightly lit, central commons area as the nationally acclaimed Kashmere Alumni Reunion Stage Band joined with the dance team and cheerleaders to kick off the festivities. Continue reading

HISD will add extra minutes to the end of each school day for the remainder of the 2017-18 year. The added minutes will make up for instruction time lost to this month’s winter ice storm, which closed schools for two days Jan. 16-17.
By adding the makeup time to the end of each day, HISD can continue to provide students with safe and reliable transportation.
HISD will not need to add makeup days to the calendar, and no changes will be made to holidays, grading cycles, or the last day of school, which will remain June 1, 2018 for students and June 4, 2018 for teachers.
Chief Operating Officer Brian Busby received the President’s Award in recognition of the outstanding work the Business Operations unit has performed in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
The award was given at the Jan. 18 board meeting by outgoing Board of Education President Wanda Adams, who noted Business Operations’ “dedication, commitment and support to HISD and of the Houston community in wake of Hurricane Harvey.” Continue reading

Condit Elementary School was named Thursday as one of four state recipients of the prestigious 2017-2018 Caudill Award, the highest honor given in the annual Exhibit of School Architecture competition.
Contest judges described the newly built school as a “transformational learning environment” that makes excellent use of its space, reflects the school’s 100-year history, and serves as a showcase campus for the district. Continue reading
The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday approved turnaround plans for the campuses designated Year Two Improvement Required by the Texas Education Agency.
Schools with this designation have not met state standards for two years. These four campuses – Bonham Elementary School, Gregory-Lincoln Education Center (prekindergarten through grade 8), Madison High School, and Washington High School – are required to develop and submit a two-year plan to improve student outcomes. Three Houston Independent School District schools have been nominated for the U.S. Department of Education’s prestigious national 2018 Blue Ribbon Schools designation.
The National Blue Ribbon award is given annually to high-performing schools to showcase the hard work of students and educators. Challenge Early College High School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, and East Early College High School are among 26 public schools in Texas to be nominated by the Texas Education Agency. The Houston Independent School District Board of Education welcomed three new trustees and three re-elected trustees on Thursday, Jan. 18, in the Manuel Rodriguez Jr. Board Auditorium at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. Elizabeth Santos (District I), Sergio Lira (District III) and Susan Deigaard (District V) were formally sworn in, and trustees Wanda Adams, Anne Sung, and Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca renewed their oaths of office.
Trustees also will consider turnaround plans for schools in second-year Improvement Required status
The Houston Independent School District Board of Education on Thursday will swear in three new trustees – Elizabeth Santos (District I), Sergio Lira (District III) and Susan Deigaard (District V) – and re-elected trustees Wanda Adams, Anne Sung, and Holly Maria Flynn Vilaseca.
Santos won the seat vacated by Anna Eastman. Deigaard won the seat vacated by Michael L. Lunceford. Both Eastman and Lunceford chose not to run for re-election. Lira will fill the unexpired term of the late District III Trustee Manuel Rodríguez Jr., which runs through 2019. Continue reading
Offices expected to reopen and classes expected to resume on Thursday
Houston Independent School District schools and offices will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 17 as a precautionary measure because of inclement weather and the related potential for dangerous road conditions.
HISD officials have been monitoring the weather forecast and have determined that continuing icy road conditions across the Houston area may make for dangerous driving on Wednesday morning. As a result, all HISD schools and district administrative offices will be closed Wednesday as a precautionary measure.
Schools and offices are expected to reopen at their regularly scheduled time on Thursday, Jan. 18.
