Free COVID-19 screening testing for students and campus staff

Starting January 2022, HISD will provide free COVID-19 testing to all consenting HISD students and staff ​on participating campuses. This testing program is offered in partnership with the Houston Health Department and Fulgent Genetics. It will be available to any HISD student and campus staff with a digital consent form on file.                                                                           

Testing is completely voluntary and requires the student’s parent/guardian to first provide a one-time consent by completing a digital consent form available here. HISD students and campus staff 18 years or older may give consent by completing the form through the provided link.

DeAnda ES students receive books from Houston Texans

Students from DeAnda Elementary School received books donated by the Houston Texans and nonprofit Books Between Kids. Each student was able to select six books to increase their home library at no cost.

Books Between Kids recently received a $25,000 Inspire Change Grant from the Texans, ConocoPhillips, Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages and Miller Lite.

Twelve students from Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts were named 2022 YoungArts winners and finalists by the National YoungArts Foundation, which identified them as some of the nation’s most promising young artists in visual, literary, design and performing arts.

Barbara Bush Literary Foundation marks major milestone at Scarborough ES

Scarborough Elementary School made history when it received the Barbara Bush Literary Foundation’s 100,000th My Home Library. During a celebration on campus, all 620 students received a My Home Library package, which featured six new books for students to start their own collection at home.

Proposed health and physical education instructional materials available for online review

HISD is currently reviewing new health and physical education instructional materials for grades K–12 as part of the Texas Education Association’s (TEA) Proclamation 2022 review and adoption process. Materials recommended by the district and adopted by the HISD Board of Education will be available for use in schools starting in fall 2022.
