After tough first-round playoff action for 12 HISD varsity squads last weekend, Lamar and Reagan high schools have survived to meet more suburban opponents in the second round of playoffs.
Lamar prevailed over Morton Ranch, 38-14, and will face Alief Taylor at 2 p.m. Saturday at Delmar-Tusa Stadium. Click here for an account of the game.
Reagan and Hogg Celebrate New IB Status
Reagan High School and Hogg Middle School are officially celebrating their new status this week as International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools, the latest HISD campuses to receive official authorization. After receiving approval July 5, the schools were able to begin offering the rigorous IB program when the new school year launched, creating the first continuous IB feeder pattern in the historic Houston Heights. Students begin the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) at Harvard Elementary and progress to the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Hogg and Reagan.
12 HISD Football Teams Head Into Playoffs
Those Friday Night Lights will continue to shine – on Thursday and Saturday nights, too – for 12 HISD varsity squads that are extending their seasons into playoff games this week.
Pre-sale tickets are being sold at campuses at $4 for students and $6 for adults, but will cost $8 at the gate. The only exceptions are the Lamar-Morton Ranch and Madison-Katy showdowns at Katy ISD’s Rhodes Stadium, which will cost $5 for students and $10 for adults, and the Bellaire vs. Cinco Ranch game, which is $4 for students and $6 for adults in pre-sale but $5 for students and $10 for adults at the gate.
Here’s the rundown of this week’s playoffs. We’ll let you know next Monday who has made the second round.
Seven Students and One Coach Recognized by Positive Coaching Alliance

Seven students from six HISD high schools were honored recently as finalists in the Positive Coaching Alliance of Houston’s “Triple-Impact Competitor” scholarship program.
Five of those students — Leticia Adamut (Furr HS), Rafael Ameloza (Jones HS), Henry Ho (Lee HS), Lyndsey Lafitte (Lamar HS), and Rachel Smith (Bellaire HS) — walked away with $2,000 each after being named winners, while two Leslies — Leslie Cundiff from Bellaire HS and Leslie Pompa from East Early College HS — took home $500 as finalists.

61-Year-Old New Teacher Featured in Community eNews
A man who wanted to be a teacher since he was in middle school proves that it’s never too late to realize your dreams. The 61-year-old, who spent about 30 years managing fast-food restaurants, is a new teacher at Deady Middle School, and he’s featured in the Aug. 9 edition of community eNews.

Reagan HS and Hogg MS Celebrate IB Authorization

HISD Recognizes Top Six JROTC Cadets in HISD Class of 2013
Students come from HSLECJ, Lamar, Reagan, SHMSTC, Scarborough, and Waltrip
HISD’s JROTC program formally honored its top six cadets from the Class of 2013 during the Annual HISD JROTC Final Review and Awards Ceremony on April 20.
The students were chosen from the ranks of all graduating seniors in HISD’s 25 JROTC programs and all were promoted to Cadet Colonel, which is the highest rank attainable in the JROTC program. Continue reading
