Milby HS senior chosen as 2023 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship winner

A Milby High School senior has been selected as a recipient for the 2023 Cooke College Scholarship presented by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

Francisco Chavez was chosen out of a pool of more than 5,600 applicants from across the nation. He will receive up to $55,000 a year for four years to attend college.

SpEd Spring Parent Summit returns to in person April 29

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic, HISD’s Office of Special Education Services will hold its semi-annual summit for HISD families in person. The Special Education Spring Parent Summit is set for Saturday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 West 18th Street, 77092).

HISD School Choice application enters Phase II

Houston Independent School District’s School Choice application is now in Phase II, and families will learn the lottery result the week of April 5, 2023.

Phase II runs through June 15, 2023. During this time, families placed on waitlists will receive offers as seats become available. All families can apply to campuses with seats available by visiting https://ChooseHISD.my.site.com/Apply.

Student artists create mobile masterpieces for annual Art Car Parade

One of the most beloved and well-known events in the city of Houston is the annual Houston Art Car Parade. Started by a commune of local artists in the 1980s, the Art Car Parade has evolved into a city-wide project representative of the creativity and joie de vivre of the Bayou City and has drawn in participants from all walks of life and of all ages.

The 36th Annual Art Car Parade will take place on Saturday, April 15, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The largest celebration of its kind, the parade will feature more than 250 vehicle works of art constructed by HISD students and staff, professional organizations, youth groups, and other creative Houstonian artists. The parade begins at Allen Parkway and Bagby Street and ends at Allen Parkway and Taft Street.

HISD new student enrollment for 2023-2024 now open

In Houston Independent School District, children dream BIG. Teachers with heart and passion like no one else set students up for success. Every campus has a specialist who can help with food, clothing, housing support, and so much more. And there is a learning option as unique as your child.

Beginning Monday, April 3, new students in grades pre-K through 12 can enroll in school with HISD for the 2023-2024 school year.

HISD to host second annual Pride Summit

Houston Independent School District will host its second annual Pride Summit for students grades 6-12 and their parents and caregivers on Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Pride Summit is a virtual event which offers participants a unique opportunity to support LGBTQ+ students and cultivate relationships within the community through education and advocacy.

The summit will be held via Zoom to best accommodate participants throughout the district and ensure that everyone can attend the summit safely and privately.
