Annual Grads Within Reach Walk encourages students to re-enroll and graduate

Community members and HISD employees gathered at Booker T. Washington High School on Saturday, September 10, to take part in the annual Grads Within Reach Walk. The event took volunteers to the doorsteps of students who had withdrawn from school due to various personal challenges to encourage them to go back and earn their diplomas.

As of August 29, there were 5,730 students within the district who did not return for the new school year. Staff from nearly 30 high schools visited the homes of these students to offer support and resources.

HISD makes significant gains in student achievement outcomes

The ratings are in, and the Houston Independent School District has made significant academic gains since the last time letter grades were given by the Texas Education Agency.

HISD earned a solid B+ from the TEA and maintained its overall 88 rating from 2019. The TEA did not give grades the last two academic years as school districts navigated the pandemic.

G-Unity Business Lab students compete in inaugural Hustle Tank event

The 60 students from Kashmere, Wheatley, and Worthing High Schools that make up the G-Unity Business Lab competed in the inaugural Hustle Tank event on Tuesday, May 25, at University of Houston’s Cullen Performance Hall.

The competition is set up much like the TV show Shark Tank. Throughout the school year, the students created business plans for their companies, collaborated with coaches and mentors, and prepared pitches for the Hustle Tank judges, including rapper and G-Unity Founder, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson.

Lamar HS internships produce ongoing dividends

As the school year wrapped up in June, rising Lamar High School senior Ariana Valdez pondered her future.

The 17-year-old had been tapped in the spring for a financial internship sponsored by the Smart Financial Credit Union branch on the Lamar campus. As she embraced the program, her perspective shifted.

HISD hosting teacher job fair on July 24

The Houston Independent School District is hosting a teacher job fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Delmar Fieldhouse, 2020 Mangum Road, 77092. Check in time is 8:30 a.m.

Candidates will have the opportunity to meet principals and other leaders and take part in on-the-spot interviews.

Student leadership program hosts luncheon for interns

When the alarm goes off at 6 a.m., Joshua Martínez gets a quick bite of breakfast and heads onto the freeway to arrive on time at the Hattie Mae White building for his first office job.

Joshua is one of 20 interns working in HISD’s Central Office this summer for six weeks. He is assigned to the Communications department, reporting on new superintendent Millard House II and his campus visits.

“I have held service jobs before, so I know the importance of making good first impressions,” said the 18-year-old who graduated from Heights High School with acceptance to The University of Texas at El Paso in the fall.
