HISD third graders define success with massive donation of dictionaries

Beginning in 2016 with only five schools, the Rotary Club of Houston’s Dictionary Project has been dedicated to providing reading resources to HISD third graders. The number of recipient schools has grown every year, and this year, thanks to the generosity of individual donor Kandy Kaye Horn, every third grader in every HISD elementary school was given their own dictionary.

HISD to be closed March 13–17 for Spring Break

All HISD campuses and offices will be closed for Spring Break from Monday, March 13, through Friday, March 17, 2023.

Schools and offices will reopen for normal business on Monday, March 20, 2023.

Employees should consult the duty schedules posted here.

The HISD Police Department will be patrolling district facilities all during the break. Emergencies may be reported by calling 713-892-7777.

Annual ‘When I Grow Up’ career expo set for April 15

Dozens of exhibitors from local companies will be on hand to help students explore their options in high-demand, high-growth industries at the 11th annual “When I Grow Up” career expo.

The event will take place Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center (4400 W. 18th Street, 77092). All HISD students in grades K-12 and their families are invited.

HISD educators nominated for national award for making a difference in the lives of students

Two HISD educators have been nominated for National Life Group Foundation’s 2022-2023 LifeChanger of the Year Award.

Washington High School Assistant Principal Dr. Valencia Hall and Eastwood Academy High School AP government teacher Ronald Castro were nominated by family members and are now eligible to receive one of 17 cash prizes up to $10,000.

HISD offering learning and activity sessions for pre-K parents

HISD families are invited to join the Early Childhood Team in a fun-filled session of hands-on learning!

The Pre-K Parent Palooza is an exciting opportunity for pre-K parents and caregivers to meet experts in the early childhood field and receive social and emotional board books, make and take activities, and a Pre-K Parent Guide with quick at-home ideas to enhance their child’s socio-emotional, math, and literacy skills.

Parents and caregivers can choose to attend one of the following sessions:

  • March 7, from 4-5 p.m. at Fonwood ECC, Mistral ECC, and Woodsen ES
  • May 9, from 4-5 p.m. at Neff ELC, Bellfort ECC, and Sherman ES

HISD receives prestigious designation for excellence in budget presentation

The number-crunchers in HISD’s Office of Budgeting and Financial Planning have a lot on their plate on the average day, but since the COVID-19 pandemic, the change in metric for what we prioritize as individuals and as a community has created all new challenges for them to rise to.

As we adjust to our new normal, it is more important than ever that HISD’s budget is curated in a transparent and detailed way that clearly communicates the goals and urgencies of the district. With these objectives in mind, HISD submitted its budget presentation for consideration for the Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) and was awarded the title for the 2022-2023 fiscal year.
