HISD welcomes aspiring teachers born outside of the U.S. to apply for alternative certification

As a global district in a global city, Houston Independent School District is well-positioned to welcome highly qualified aspiring immigrant teachers to work in areas of critical need. Candidates born outside of the U.S. who require visa sponsorship are invited to join the district’s Alternative Certification Program.

Houston ISD’s Alternative Certification Program is dedicated to recruiting college graduates from diverse educational and career backgrounds who are passionate about making a career change and making a bigger difference in the lives of students. The one-year program is free for candidates who commit to teach in HISD for two years.

HISD receives funding from community partners to progress new recycling program

On Feb. 21, HISD welcomed representatives from ExxonMobil, LyondellBasell and Tricon Energy to a reception at Lantrip Elementary School where the community partners presented the district with $300,000 in donations to kick start a new recycling program.

Teen journalists discover “More to the Story” covering news in their school and community

Attucks Middle School prides itself on wearing many hats in order to consistently create opportunities for students to engage with and experience the community around them. In doing so, Attucks has made itself a home for a variety of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) magnet programs including a gardening club, an award-winning robotics program, and a culinary club via the Attucks STEAM Academy.

HISD launches on-campus telehealth services for students

In an ongoing effort to expand non-instructional supports for students, Houston Independent School District is now offering telehealth services at no cost for students. 

Through the new partnership with Hazel Health, HISD students will be able to connect with diverse, multilingual, licensed medical providers to receive mental and physical health services.

Learn about HISD’s African American namesake schools this Black History Month

HISD is celebrating Black History Month by exploring the many schools named for distinguished African Americans in the community. The district has more than 30 schools that recognize the contributions of African American leaders, ranging from renowned educators to legislators and community leaders.

The first week focused on HISD’s namesake high schools, alternative schools, and the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center. The second week focused on HISD’s middle and combination schools. This week, learn more about HISD’s namesake early childhood centers and elementary schools.

HISD scholars think outside the box for inaugural Innovation Fair

HISD prides itself on the inventive and creative efforts of students from all corners of the huge, diverse district, and the participants in the 2023 Innovation Fair were no exception. The fair, held at The Ion in downtown Houston on Friday, Feb. 10, showcased 20 projects developed by elementary, middle, and high school students who pitched their ideas to a rotating audience of spectators, investors, mentors, and judges.
