As one federal literacy grant to HISD is ending, the U.S. Department of Education has approved a new, expanded $749,982 grant that will fund “Project REALITY” family library activities at 10 HISD elementary schools and extend to others during the summer. The acronym stands for Reading Elevates All Learners Through Integrated Technology for Youth.

A teen health summit featuring health screenings, games, music, prizes and more will be held at Worthing High School, 9215 Scott St., from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Houston ISD District IX Trustee Wanda Adams is hosting the “All the Way Live” summit. It’s part of the We Can Do More initiative, which aims to reduce teen pregnancy throughout Houston by providing information, resources, skills, and opportunities.
We Can Do More is led by The University of Texas Prevention Research Center at UTHealth in partnership with Houston ISD, Baylor College of Medicine, Communities in Schools – Houston, Collaborative for Children and families in the Sunnyside neighborhood. Help HISD get dropouts back in school by volunteering for the 2014 Grads Within Reach walk.
This year’s event will be held at 24 high schools from 8 a.m. to noon on Sat., Sept. 6, 2014. Volunteers will be placed in teams and fan out across the city, based on the school to which they are assigned, and visit the last known address of students who dropped out or didn’t show up for the first weeks of school. Twenty-five students from HISD three high schools spent their part of their summer getting a sneak peak into what their future may look like, and will continue with a one-year internship.
The students, who attend Davis, Jordan and Worthing high schools, were selected to participate in the Admiral Hospitality Scholars, an internship program which was founded by former San Antonio Spurs star David Robinson. Continue reading
Teachers at eight different HISD schools have been spending more time with avatars this spring—but it’s not because they’re playing on FarmVille, The Sims, or Second Life.
Instead, these educators have been fine-tuning their instructional skills using TeachLivE, a pilot program in which flesh-and-blood teachers deliver actual lessons to virtual students in a computer-simulated classroom. The students are programmed to respond in real time to the actions of the teacher, so instructors can identify ways to improve their lessons almost immediately.

A recent swimming pool renovation at Waltrip High School features lane ropes, starting blocks and a new timer system, making the pool competition ready.
The work is the latest visible milestone for the Oak Forest high school, which is moving forward on commitments made in both the 2007 and 2012 bond programs. In the southern part of the city, work is also getting underway on a new building addition at Worthing High School.

HISD released a new video that shows progress on the planning and design of a new two-story building addition at Worthing High School.
Worthing will receive a building addition under HISD’s 2007 bond program and a new building that will be funded by the district’s 2012 $1.89 billion bond program. The facility will house academics, performance arts, athletics, and other departments.
“We have an opportunity to repurpose Worthing High School to make it more relevant for the students who attend it and reclaim some of the students we lost by putting some 21st century programming in and making the school a 21st century design,” said Worthing Principal John Modest.

Staff, alumni and students have shared ideas for their building project with the school’s architect. Many would like to see the school have flexible and open learning areas with more daylight views, enhanced technology, and modern finishes.
“I think the student input is most valid because the school is for the students,” said Worthing student Heaven Murphy, who calls Worthing the “pride of Sunnyside,” a community the school has called home since 1958.
“This new building needs to be a very flexible space, one that we can adapt to the needs of our students and our program,” Modest said. “We want Worthing to regain the prominence it once held in the community.”

Reagan, Washington HB 5 sessions show what’s in store for next year’s ninth-graders
High school is changing in a big way for next year’s ninth-grade students, and dozens of HISD families got a jump on finding out how at two community meetings Monday night at Reagan and Washington high schools.
The changes are coming as a result of state legislation known as House Bill 5 – and HISD has rebranded the process for its students and their families as “Plan Your Path.”
“Plan Your Path” is all about guiding students to “dream big,” explained Alejandro Morua, HISD’s general manager of Family and Community Engagement, by combining career awareness and selection with a rigorous academic curriculum from pre-K through graduation.
