HISD taps community program to feed Houstonians in need

HISD’s Student Assistance Department knows that students can’t learn on an empty stomach. While Nutrition Services provides students with three nutritious meals a day, Student Assistance strives to provide support for the whole student, and sometimes, that means also supporting their families and communities.

Student Assistance partnered with Second Servings, a local nonprofit that specializes in “food rescue,” the practice of recovering and redirecting edible food from grocery stores and other food retailers that would otherwise go to waste. Second Servings works with these retailers to collect short-dated or unsold food items and redistribute them to people in need.

HISD partners with community donors for Back-to-School Bonanza

For students, summer vacation is in full swing, but HISD is hard at work preparing for the impending fall semester. Preparing for almost 190,000 students for a new school year isn’t a task that can be done alone, however, this is where the collaboration of community partners is vital.

HISD’s Community Partnerships Department, with the help of local businesses, is working to secure resources for its annual Back-to-School Bonanza, an effort to support multiple back-to-school supply drives throughout the district.

A quiet meeting room on the third floor of Minute Maid Park became a command center of dialing phones on June 28 and 29 as HISD employee volunteers rallied to contact unenrolled students and encourage them to come back to school in the fall.

HISD partners with Nickelodeon to kick off summer vacation with a sizzle

Summer vacation is representative of freedom and relaxation for students all over the world, a three-month period where the last thing on their mind is schoolwork and schedules. In preparation for a season of cartoons and endless play, HISD teamed up with Nickelodeon and several local partners to launch the Summer Sizzle Campaign and send students off with fun tools for mental enrichment and tips for staying safe outside of school.

Student artists ride in style at the Houston Art Bike Festival

HISD art clubs and classes assembled at MacGregor Park to take part in the 2023 Houston Art Bike Parade and Festival on Saturday, May 13. Presented by the Houston Parks Board and The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, the Art Bike Festival is an annual opportunity for students and community artists to showcase their creativity and to explore the bayou trails around the park.

HISD and City of Houston award winners of the inaugural Truck Artwork Competition

In January, HISD announced a contest in partnership with the City of Houston to encourage the district’s young Michelangelos to learn more about recycling through art. Participants, grades K-12, were asked to create a work of art that reflected the contest’s theme, “I Recycle for Houston.” The winning pieces would be displayed on the side of City of Houston Solid Waste Management collection trucks.

HISD hosts a day of learning and empowerment with second annual LGBTQ+ Pride Summit

On Saturday, May 6, HISD held its second annual Pride Summit, a virtual event for LGBTQ+ students, parents and guardians, and allies to learn and connect in a supportive and safe environment.

Attendees signed up for participation in either middle school, high school, or parent sessions—with each session providing specially-curated resources.

Carnegie Vanguard sophomores blaze a trail to Academic WorldQuest National Competition

For Siddharth Dasari, the decision to involve his school in the Academic WorldQuest Competition was a no-brainer. A sophomore at Carnegie Vanguard High School, Dasari has an encyclopedic mind for current events and a passion for competition. He also found out about Academic WorldQuest with only a month to prepare before the competition that would qualify his school’s team for nationals.

With time running out, Dasari enlisted the smartest and most capable people he knew: his friends.
