HISD launches 2024 Souper Bowl of Caring

Team HISD, in collaboration with the HISD Foundation, is calling on the HISD community to participate in the 2024 Souper Bowl of Caring, a national, youth-led food drive to fight food insecurity.  

Souper Bowl of Caring is going on now, and collections will be accepted through Friday, Feb. 9. Donations will help to stock HISD Souper Pantries, and campuses, staff, students, and organizations can participate by hosting individual food drive events or donating funds directly to the HISD Foundation.

Blackshear Elementary student triumphs at 28th annual MLK Oratory Competition

Foley & Lardner LLP hosted the 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, Jan. 12. Each year, HISD elementary students recite original speeches inspired by the civil rights leader. This year’s theme was “How would Dr. King reflect on the 60 years since his I Have a Dream speech?”

889 high school juniors assembled at Delmar Fieldhouse for HISD’s first-ever Military Career Day on Thursday, Jan. 11. The event was packed with information about the advantages of pursuing military or ROTC options after high school.

HISD announces the creation of Cullen Military Academy

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) announced that it will open Cullen Military Academy at Cullen Middle School in the 2024-2025 school year. The academy will support students aspiring to serve in the United States military after high school graduation. They will receive high-quality instruction and develop skills to become civic-minded, disciplined leaders committed to excellence and service.

HISD and Texas Southern University announce new partnership to train aspiring local teachers

Houston Independent School District (HISD) and Texas Southern University (TSU) this week launched the Learning Legacy Pact to help aspiring educators become teachers in HISD. Through the partnership, students in TSU’s College of Education will earn their teacher certification while getting paid to work as a Teacher Apprentice in the District’s New Education System (NES) or NES-aligned schools.
