Garden Oaks Montessori additions set for first quarter completion

Construction of two new buildings at Garden Oaks Montessori is nearing the finish line as both structures, as well as the first phase of campus renovations, are scheduled to be complete next quarter.

In the new buildings, external masonry and metal panels have been installed, as have most windows. All interior walls have been inspected and now are being insulated and covered.

Much of the remaining work will focus on interior finishes, including installation of ceiling panels, drywall, doors, and other built-ins.

“It’s been a lot of hard work, but the project has made great progress,” said Garden Oaks Montessori Principal Lindsey Pollock. “We’re planning to move in over spring break, and that’s very exciting.” Continue reading →

Despite a stormy forecast, the weather cleared up just long enough Friday morning for the Garden Oaks Montessori community to officially celebrate the start of construction on their new addition and renovations.

The suddenly sunny skies matched the mood of hundreds of students, staff, and community members who took part in the groundbreaking ceremony.

“We have some sunlight, so let’s make the most of this beautiful moment in time,” Principal Lindsey Pollock said as she kicked off the celebration, which included student performances and a recitation of the Garden Oaks Creed.

More HISD students to find fresh seasonal produce on the menu

Last year, HISD’s Nutrition Services department launched a pilot program at a handful of campuses to increase the selection of fresh fruits and vegetables available to students in the cafeteria at lunch.

That program was so successful that the district has expanded it this year, and a total of 26 HISD schools now regularly offer a fresh fruit and vegetable bar. Continue reading →

‘Leader in Me’ leading Longfellow ES students to academic excellence

Thousands of adults have benefited from Stephen Covey’s Seven Habits of Highly Effective People since that book was first published more than 20 years ago, and now, HISD students are starting to benefit from it, too.

Over the years, that self-help classic has been refined and reimagined to help young people cultivate a sense of personal responsibility and leadership skills, and the result is “The Leader in Me (LIM),” which is currently in place at Longfellow Elementary School and two other HISD campuses, Shearn ES and Garden Oaks Montessori.

“’The Leader in Me’ provides the most solid foundation I have ever seen to help kids lead a principled, centered life,” said Longfellow ES Principal Norma Perez-Gwynn. “It has made an incredible difference with our children.”

Children’s book inspires River Oaks ES teacher’s trip to Japan

Each year, students in Pia De Leon’s fourth-grade class at River Oaks Elementary School study Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes, a children’s book about a girl who died from leukemia as a result of radiation poisoning during World War II.

This summer, De Leon will be traveling to the very Japanese city in which that story is set, Hiroshima, where she will visit the Children’s Peace Memorial in honor of the child for whom the book was named, Sadako Sasaki.

Waltrip HS shares love of robotics with Garden Oaks ES

Garden Oaks Elementary students recently had a hands-on chance to learn more about science, technology, engineering and math thanks to help from Waltrip High School.

The theme of the May 22 STEM Night was “Around the World with STEM.” Students were given passports to visit four different areas. “Roboville” was one of the most popular “countries.”

Garden Oaks Montessori anti-bullying honor for ‘making sure everybody has a place at the table’

When Principal Lindsey Pollock was approached by a group of parents last year with concerns about some of the other families at Garden Oaks Montessori, she said, “Gosh, I’m going to have to do something about that.”

But instead of encouraging their intolerance, she brought the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s (HRC) Welcoming Schools program to the campus, which takes a comprehensive approach to bullying prevention and creating a safe and supportive environment at elementary schools. Its approach is lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) inclusive and creates school climates that welcome all family structures and all students.

HISD students, staff join national school choice celebration at Union Station

HISD students and staff were among the thousands who attended the National School Choice Week kick-off at Houston’s Union Station Saturday, Jan. 25. The celebration brought together Democrats and Republicans, home-schoolers, public school districts, charters, and even a few virtual learners around a common cause: school choice.

Superintendent Terry Grier, introduced by KIPP Co-founder Mike Feinberg, pointed out to a sea of yellow scarves and signs advocating school choice. Nearly 70,000 students in HISD are exercising their right to choose the school that meets their unique needs. Contingents from Elrod,Garden Oaks, Parker, Poe Red, and Roberts elementary schools; Clifton, Fleming, Johnston and Revere middle schools; and Chavez, Challenge Early College and South Early College high schools were there.

Score! Houston Texans Award NFL Play 60 Grants to 4 HISD Schools

Four HISD schools have scored big with the Houston Texans, winning NFL Play 60 grants from the team to supply campuses with playground or gym equipment that broadens physical education and afterschool programs.
