T.H. Rogers student represents HISD with rodeo writing competition win

In many ways, 10-year-old Shiloh Balasuriya is an average fourth grader. His favorite things to do are read books and play outside, and when he grows up, he has ambitions of being a world-famous chef. Shiloh has a lot in common with his other classmates at T.H. Rogers School, but this year, he was the only student from HISD to place in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual Trailblazer Writing Competition.

HISD third graders define success with massive donation of dictionaries

Beginning in 2016 with only five schools, the Rotary Club of Houston’s Dictionary Project has been dedicated to providing reading resources to HISD third graders. The number of recipient schools has grown every year, and this year, thanks to the generosity of individual donor Kandy Kaye Horn, every third grader in every HISD elementary school was given their own dictionary.

HISD families are invited to join the Early Childhood Team in a fun-filled session of hands-on learning!

The Pre-K Parent Palooza is an exciting opportunity for pre-K parents and caregivers to meet experts in the early childhood field and receive social and emotional board books, make and take activities, and a Pre-K Parent Guide with quick at-home ideas to enhance their child’s socio-emotional, math, and literacy skills.

Parents and caregivers can choose to attend one of the following sessions:

  • March 7, from 4-5 p.m. at Fonwood ECC, Mistral ECC, and Woodsen ES
  • May 9, from 4-5 p.m. at Neff ELC, Bellfort ECC, and Sherman ES

Student literati make reading into a team sport with annual Name That Book Competition

Five teams of students sit in tight circles on the stage in the Jane Long Academy Auditorium. It’s 9 a.m. on a school day, so the event is sparsely attended, but the few audience members watch in rapt attention as the teams make selections on tablets passed from hand to hand between them, quietly deliberating, until their 60 allotted seconds have passed.

Principals of the Year honored with surprise celebrations at their campuses

Each year, HISD honors two principals who represent the very best things that the district’s leadership has to offer. This year’s honorees, Principals Amanda Wingard and Keoshya Dunn, were recognized at their home campuses in surprise celebrations orchestrated by their students and colleagues. Superintendent Millard House II was present to present Wingard and Dunn with certificates of appreciation for their outstanding service to their schools and the HISD community.
