Students at eight HISD high schools will now receive their first meal of the day right in their classrooms, thanks to a $64,000 grant from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC), funded by Kellogg’s corporate citizenship fund.
The money will be used to purchase equipment, food, labor, and marketing materials to implement the First Class Breakfast program at Kashmere, Lee, Madison, Milby, Sam Houston, Sterling, Washington, and Wheatley high schools. Continue reading

Three Houston ISD seniors each have $2,000 scholarships to put toward college thanks to the Positive Coaching Alliance.

Young Khrystin “Kyssi” Andrews has been getting a lot of attention since her mother waged a social media campaign to obtain a much-needed medical test for her daughter in 2012.
Last week, the three-time cancer survivor went on a dream date with “Prince Charming” in honor of her sixth birthday, and on Oct. 17, she was named the honorary team captain of the Madison High School Marlins during their homecoming game against the Austin High School Mustangs. Continue reading
The cadets in uniform, the large buildings, the football stadium, and students skateboarding and riding bicycles to class were some of the first things Yates High School senior Jason Covarrubias noticed upon arriving on the campus of Texas A&M University.
Until last week, he had never visited a college outside of Houston.
“I could go by myself on a college visit, but I’d be lost in the process,” he said. “My parents probably couldn’t go with me because they have to work, and I work on the weekends. So for HISD to do this, I really appreciate it.”

HISD took about 120 12th graders to College Station last week to visit Texas A&M. Students from Davis, Furr, Kashmere, North Forest, Worthing, and Yates high schools and Young Men’s College Preparatory Academy boarded charter buses as early as 6:30 a.m. to participate in the day-long trip. Parents considering Parker ES’s music program can see its advanced bands perform Oct. 18
Many HISD schools hold campus carnivals each fall to raise money for various programs and initiatives, but some also offer parents a sneak peek at their magnet programs.
Four hundred forty-four elementary students spent their Saturday at Welch Middle School for the first competition of the 2014-2015 UIL Academics season.
Students from Condit, Cornelius, DeChaumes, Highland Heights, Horn, Law, Twain, Piney Point, and Windsor Village elementary schools, along with Energized for Excellence Academy, competed.
Horn Elementary claimed first place in sweepstakes. DeChaumes Elementary won second place in sweepstakes, and Twain Elementary took home third place.

As one federal literacy grant to HISD is ending, the U.S. Department of Education has approved a new, expanded $749,982 grant that will fund “Project REALITY” family library activities at 10 HISD elementary schools and extend to others during the summer. The acronym stands for Reading Elevates All Learners Through Integrated Technology for Youth.
“It shows that the Department of Education has faith in what we’re doing,” said Liz Philippi, manager of HISD Library Services. Continue reading
Marcile Hollingsworth
The retired educator who contributed so much to HISD’s science department that the district named its resource center after her has died. (Francis) Marcile Hollingsworth passed away on Sept. 26, 2014, at the age of 90.
Hollingsworth, who joined Team HISD as a science instructor in 1951, devoted 36 years to Houston’s children as a teacher and later as the director of science for all grades. She wrote HISD’s curriculum guides and laboratory manuals for chemistry and physical science, and it was because of her efforts that HISD created its Oceanography Department, which grew into the Living Resource Center. Usually, the benefits of reading include a bigger vocabulary, greater word comprehension, and better conversation skills, but dozens of HISD students received a different type of reward recently from two of the district’s community partners for focusing on literacy over the summer.
Most of the students were recognized for participating in the district’s Extended Primary Year program, which was offered at 29 elementary schools.
“The HISD Literacy Team joined forces with Strategic Partnerships and Elves & More to award bicycles to 100 children who met their literacy goals, had excellent attendance and conduct, and exemplified a can-do attitude,” explained Literacy Director Cindy Puryear. “The Literacy Team will partner with Elves & More again this holiday season to reward more that 7,000 scholars for their hard work and determination. One thousand of those will be rewarded for meeting or exceeding their literacy goals.” Continue reading
